What do you want it to do when it gets there?  Poke a hole in paper, kill a varmint, kill a deer?
As for the two scopes you listed....I don't think much of either of them.  If I were to give wisdom on a scope, I'd tell you to spend AT LEAST half as much for the scope as you did for the gun...Super Sniper, Nikon Monarch, Bushnell 4200 and so on.

The .243 will have a lot more punch, and will stand up better to wind. The .223 ammo will be much less expensive than the .243. At 600 yds you will need much better quality of glass than you will get from BSA.

Between the two, the 243 for sure and NO BSA scope!

I'd just go with the .308 and be done with it.

243 definately. Wind drift on the lighter bullets could make it fun to hit those 600yd targets!

I agree with 3_Tens assessment.
.243 is better, but the ammo for the .223 is less expensive.

I'd start with a standard 3x9 scope, depending on budget I think a setup like this deserves at least a Nikon Primos or bushnell 4200 both in 3x9 and at a cost of $250-300.  From there your options are almost limitless.

I agree with this completely. And as far as not wanting a fixed power, thats understandable. However, you don't want a BSA scope EVER. I can personally attest to that. I can't dial ranges to 300 yards, and they're marked on the turret! The thing doesn't track..........well at all. It goes where it wants to. It doesn't care what you input. I've had it go left when I dialed right. It wasn't the gun, that much I know.

Since you did specify heavy bbl,I'd look for something in either .25 or 6.5 caliber.  I did hear a rumor that Howa was going to chamber for the 6.5-284.
As for BSA,I ain't goin there.

I have 4 fat barreled center fire rifles. Among those are a 223 & 243. The other two are 22-250 & 308. If I had to pick one, I'd take the 308 hands down. I have fired it in a police sniper match at up to 600 yards and can pull off Head shots at that distance. Not every shot mind you but enough to get your point across. #2 choice.... 243 Fo Sho.

What type of rifle are you going to use? AR type or bolt action.  What type of shooting are you going to use? ( Light plinking, target, tacital, varmit,)  I would go with the 223.    Being a very popular cartidge, there is a lot of data on different ammo avaible. You will to think about what bullet weight your going to use, you may run into some twist issues.  I have 2 remington 700vls in .223 , one with a 1in12 twist for bullets under 60gr. The second ond has a  1in8 twist for longer shots that require a bullet with a higher B.C . There  are also  many price options on rifles, optics, and ammo to meet your budget.

BE VERY WARNED!!!!    Shooting is very fun and may lead to other things like  joining a local club, a smile that just dosent go away, and worst ao all, if you do it long enough you will see that yor 1 rifle has grown into a whole safe full!
Good luck, shoot safe and good shooting!

First the 223, then a 243, then ...., then ....  Then you're like me, two safes full and a bad want for another and another. Just don't let your wife see both open at the same time. If she can't take inventory and you can always need a new one.Top Secret

You skipped the .22-250! Sad

If your going to be chasing varmints (larger than a p'dog) id look at a .22-250 and up.
