What is the advantages/disadvantages of a 30mm scope vs a 1 inch scope. Does it help in low light, durability, ? Whats better and why?  And also what diameter bell is considered to be the best for low light? Seems that people around my area have mixed reviews on this topic. Most people say the bigger the bell the better the light, but others say that anything of 44mm is not functional.  What is the truth?

Follow the link Pyro gave you, it's very good.

I've changed over my scopes to 30mm because of what I've read, the type of bases and rings I use, and how I hunt. I feel it's better unless you need a very light weight setup and are trimming ounces.

Pyro has posted all the info you need. I like the 30mm tube because I like to shoot at long ranges not just 100 yards.  biggest + for the 30 is the more ups you can get out of it.

Any Hi end brand 1inch scopes are going to bring in a good amount of light with a 42 mm.With a 30mm tube it has more room for adjustments and brings in a little more light.I used a Docter 3-9 x56mm which was outstanding for low light hunting.I like the Sightron SII 3-9x42 Big Sky for my hunting needs,it's sharp bright. The Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x50 with a 30mm tube is also a good scope for low light conditions.I believe it comes down to what you want to spend The advantage is it does bring in a little more light.Disadvantage more expensive and weighs more.

More room for W//E adjustments, yes, but the 30mm tube does not provide any advantage to light transmission vs. a 1" tube scope, all else being equal.  It just so happens that many of the best, high end Euro scopes that provide superior light transmission have 30mm tubes because Europe uses the metric system exclusively.  But again, the 30mm tube has no influence on the superior light transmission of these scopes.  Instead, it is superior glass, optimized coatings, larger apertures, and overall design that is responsible for the improved light transmission of some 30mm scopes.
