I'm going to get into pistol hunting for deer.  I have a 2x monarch and can't decide what barrel to get.  Anyone got any ideas?  I'd say shots will be less than 100 yards and I don't want a sore hand.  Is there a 'fun to shoot' caliber in the encore that works on deer?  7mm-08 perhaps?Loco

243 win, 260 rem or the 7-08, all should work fine on deer.

I should have added that .22 caliber ain't legal for deer where I live.  So a .243 is as little as I can go and still get by without encountering a pesky legal issue.

.44 or .460   I find the 45/70 a bit much.  .454 or a .358 win would have been choices if offered.  I think the .460 may be like the .45/70.  The Hornaday book shows them close number wise.

I'd start off with the .44.  It will crank since there is no barrel gap. That is a favorite here.

I like the 45/70--lots of ammo available- from mild to wild , and it can take 100 lb to 1000 lb game ...If not-- I'd go with a 308 ..It'll get'r done , inexpensive , and one of the most versatile rounds out there

..................If you`re going to only hunt  deer @ 100 yards or less with no sore hands, the 260 Remy or 7mm/08 are about as ideal as you`re going to get.

Also depends on what your version of fun shooting is. Some like the big bores with some recoil and don`t mind the sore hand.

Should you extend your pistol hunting to larger and more challenging big game, then the 45/70 would be a wise choice.

If so, then you can get two barrels.

I just went through this . I ended up with a .308 . It and the .7mm-08 are very close(but it is much easier to find ammo, cheaperammo , and there is much more bullet selection in the .308 vs .7mm-08 ) !

It is not a very fun gun to shoot...........I can only imagine what a .460 or .375 jdj or something like that would be in one of these guns ! It took me several times at the range to sight in my .308 and "if" only deer hunting.........it would be fine to shoot one here and there. But it kicks way to hard "to me" to be fun target practicing , shooting milk jugs, etc. !! I have literally left the range a couple of times with my finger bleeding from the recoil of 10 or so shots !! I start flinching real bad after 4-5 shots............so like I said.........for me it took several times at the range to get'r done !!

To do it over again............I'd probably just start with a .30-30 or .243 in a rifle cartridge ...........or just get a .44 mag barrel !

As it is..........if I get more serious about it........I will definately go buy some padded weight lifter gloves or something like that and start shooting with them ! Bucky

Thats the beauty of the Encore, the ability to switch the barrels. There are many possibilities available and you can usually buy and sell used barrels pretty easily.

Thanks for your insight!  I'll probably get the .44 mag barrel.  I've got the .460 barrel for it, but it's a carbine rifle barrel...and it'll thump ya pretty good.

As a side note, are the aftermarket barrels as good as the TC barrels?  They are quite a bit less expensive.
