New deer hunter looking for advice.  I am buying a new Browning a-bolt and am looking at scopes.  I know someone selling a used Nikon Monarch.  It is a few years old and only Says 'Nikon' on the side, no 'monarch' labeling.  Also it is supposedly a 3-9 x40-  I noticed they don't offer that currently in the monarch.  How do I know I'm not buying a piece of junk Vs. the Monarch?  Is it true that older monarch's did not say monarch anywhere on the scope?  Help please?  Additional info, the guy I am buying it from did buy it used himself from a reputable gun shop that stated it's a monarch.  I just don't know a whole lot about these and don't want to make a mistake.  My budget is about $150-175 and thought I may get an elite 3200 bushnell if this doesn't work out.

The team primos listed above is virtually the same as the old monarch, just packaged alittle differently.  Very nice optics for the price, new with no head aches or worries and personally better than the 3200.

The original Nikon scope was just labeled Nikon.  The Monarch UCC was a second generation model with the new Ultra Clear Coat coatings on it...making it even brighter than before.  The older Nikons are very good scopes but they are not Monarchs as that man said they were.  If the scope is in good condition it is a fine scope.  But the new Primos would be a newer generation and is a terrific deal while they last.

These are what is often referred to as "Pre-Monarch" Nikons.  They are very good scopes.  I have one as does my father and we use them all the time.  If you could get it for $150 it would be a good buy.  I have purchased 2 actual 3x9 Monarch's used for $175.  You don't say if your Browning is long or short action.  If you considering the Elite 3200's look at the 3x10x40 if your rifle is a short action.  This scope is designed for short action rifles.  The other guys are also right about the Primos Nikon being a good deal at $199.  If you could swing $250 I'd suggest the Elite 4200 3x9.  Hope this helps.

+1 good post, this helps me understand the monarch label better...I wish they (Nikon) had named them different...makes it hard for me to figger out which one is their best scope.  Nikon Monarch I, Nikon Monarch II, and so on would have been easier for me.

magshooter, thanks, that explains alot.  The Browning I am getting is a short action.  I was looking at 3200's so I may take another look.  As much as i'd like to get an even nicer scope, my budget is getting maxxed out quickly...
