went to the camp in woodville MS and shot 4 rifles and my Omega, for some reason this year the Omega is not grouping, so I will start with the scope, I currently have a 1980's model 3-9x40 nikon, I want to replace it this week as the season is getting close.

so will it be the Nikon Omega 3-9x40 BDC or the Real Tree for 3-9x40 for 199.00 or the Bushnell 4200 3-9x40?

I am leaning toward the Nikon Omega BDC - maybe I can learn to use the BDC, my preffered load is 2 - 777 pellets (100gr) and a barnes 245gr spitfire, with the 777 primers.

help and I appreciate your comments

thanks -js

The down side of the BDC reticle is that it only works at the highest power.  It does give you some known hold over points but the reticle is set for a 150gr powder charge so loading 100 gr (2 pellets) will have you striking entirely different distances when using the BDC.  I have one of the Nikon Omega BDC and the glass in no where near the quality of Bushnell 4200 glass so I would recommend the 4200 and sight it in at 100 then figure you should be about 12 inches low at 200 so hold over about 8 to 10 inches above the back at 200 and you should hit the kill zone. Use solid rings and base like Leupold dual dovetail base and rings - far too often the accuracy problems are the fault of cheap rings .

Remember to run a wet patch then a dry patch down the bore after each shot.

Do you have any idea of the muzzle velocity of the projectile is from your muzzleloader?  Have you or do you believe that you can develop 200 or 250 yard loads for this rifle? Most scope recommendations for muzzleloaders seem to be low magnification fixed power or very low variables.   However front stuffers have come a long way in the last few years and some are very capable of MOA at 300 yards and beyond which means at least two things.........that baby will probably kick which means you will need a rock solid scope......and also that 3-9x or 2.5-10x will also be suitable.

If most of your shots will be within 150 yards then I am sure that a 4x or less fixed powered scope in Conquest, Elite, Monarch, Signature Select, SII or even IOR will do nicely.  I think the days of putting inferior scopes on muzzleloaders is past.   Accuracy and dependability is just as important on them as any other rifle.

Thanks Guys for your comments, I was wondering about Glass quality on the Nikon Omega scope and the functionality of the BDC for this scope. I do not know the muzzle velocity. I would shoot out to 200 yards if I had too, but I have never had a range session with this ML past 100yds. I always do a complete cleaning between shots and I have the Talley 1 piece rings/base for the omega on this rifle.

SO.... I think I am leaning toward the Elite 4200....

UPDATE, I bought a Elite 4200 from SWFA, but I think Imay change plans here, the H&R or NEF 45-70 and 444 are now legal here in LA and MS during blackpowder season, so I may buy one and put the 4200 on it and then kinda stop using my TC Omega. what ya'll think? I can get a H&R for 250ish.....

If the use of smokeless powder is allowed in your state the Savage 10ML is the way to go.  Cleaning of the barrel is no more imperative than cleaning any other rifle and it shoots very fast and flat.  However, if you have fallen in love with waiting for that big black puff of smoke to clear before you can see your target it might not be for youWink

If you can use 45-70 that is by far more consistent and less of a pain in the butt than a muzzleloader. I wish Iowa would do the same as it really makes sense. You can use a 45-70 pistol in late muzzleloader or shotgun season but not use a 45-70 single shot rifle. You could probably trade the Omega onto an Encore and get the 45-70 barrel and if you have

This is a pretty common notion concerning modern muzzleloaders of today.  Actually we can't assume that a 45-70 single shot rifle will be any more consistent than some of the newer style muzzleloaders unless they might be capable of 500 yard MOA accuracy.  There has been stremendous gains in technology and engineering concerning muzzleloaders in the last 5 years and they now tend to be just like any other rifle except they don't accept cartridge type ammunition.  Here are a few links concerning these type of muzzleloaders.  Should be interesting reading.
