Greetings All - I am de-lurking, recently diagnosed with optics fever. A terrific amount of great info here - thanks to all for the info already imparted.

I am in a quandary as to what to put on my AR15, so I would welcome your opinions in the absence of the actual optics to fool around with. I have a flat-top, CAR-style, 16" barrel AR, intended primarily for HD, but also for plinking out to 300 yards tops. Oh, and I am red-green colorblind but able to see the dot/reticle of an Eotech without difficulty (and a lefty if that makes any difference). My eyes are pretty good but I am beginning to think some low magnification might be good, but I like the idea of having both eyes open around 1x

My short list is as follows, budget max around $400, possibly stretch to $450 limit including mount/rings:

1. Aimpoint CompM2 (based on superior battery life compared with the Eotech)

2. Millett's DMS 1-4x24

3. Bushnell 4200 1.25-4x24

The other factor in my equation is compatibility with my flip-up rear sight (ARMS#40A). I would prefer to keep this on the rifle, but even with high, QD rings or a mount. I am not sure this is possible with options 2 and 3.

Did I miss any viable, quality options? Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Get the Aimpoint. SWFA got a hell of a deal right now.

I shot my M2 "minute of man" at pop up steel targets out to 250 meters prone, with a factory Bushmaster and ball ammo.

I flirted with (and even swapped spit with an Eotech), but I'm an Aimpoint guy through and through. Love
Your BUIS will work perfectly with the Aimpoint as well.

Welcome to The OT!! Glad your here.

Thanks Cheaptrick - it looks like you recommend the Aimpoint over the variables - am I correct?

Yes Sir.
I feel like you'll get more "real use" out of the Aimpoint than the variables, based on what I thought you stated in your opening. Especially the HD part of your inquiry....Wink

Nothing at all wrong with the variables you listed either, but the Aimpoint sale conducted by SWFA closes it for me.
No searching in cyber space for the newest "whiz bang" ring mounts and what not either. You get the whole deal in one shot.
(No pun intended.)  Big%20Smile

The M2 is a tried and true 1x combat tested optic, my friend.
Best wishes on your choice, whatever it may be.

I hope never to have to exercise the HD option!

You are absolutely right about the SWFA deal. I have to get over the idea that the perfect, do-it-all optic is out there (and in my budget).

Thank you for taking the time to help a newbie - I think we have a winner!

Here's the same AR in differant applications.
Eotech 553
10x Super Sniper
Eotech 552 with Larue EO mount.
4-16x Nikon Monarch

The AR is a for better or worse, a VERY modular weapon. Use it to your advantage.

I also ocassionally use a carry handle sight I picked up and as of right this minute, my AR only has a Yankee Hill flip back up iron sight that's sighted in @ 100 yards.

The ARMS 40A will lay flat right  behind the ARMS 5 multibase riser ( use the 40A to co-witness or leave it down)  and you can use two 30mm rings of your choice to mount the 2moa Aimpoint 9000L which gives you the strength of two points of contact rather than one and the advantage of a 2moa dot which will cover 4 inches at 200 yds rather than 8 inches like the 4moa dot. Past 200 yds the 2moa is still useable and the 4moa really covers too much area.

I have all scopes listed - except the Bushnell, and for HD, Aimpoint or EoTech.  The variables are nice when semi-precision shots are needed, but either of the red rots will get you on target out to 300.

Thank you for your advice - I pulled the trigger on SWFA's Aimpoint M2 combo deal. Now the hard part - waiting!

I too recommend the holo or the Aimpoint for the AR fast acqusition, some don't like the battery thing. In that case the Trijicon make is a fine scope as well.

Please come back and let us know how you like it. That's a heck of a deal SWFA has going.

I agree with what has been said about the Aimpoint.  I think it is a good option.  For a risk taker, the Millett Zoom Dot may even be better!  According to what I read, there are plenty of broken Aimpoints in the sand.  Maybe someone with experience in combat could clarify.

For me, I realize my AR will not see IRAQ, for HD, I could instinctive fire in my house with a rifle, and most rounds downrange will happen at the range.  For me, that says a Millett DMS-1 with a Larue QD riser, and TPS rings.  (Frankly, I wish I could buy those all here!Yippee)  That is about the same cost as this Aimpoint deal, but on the range, the 1MOA dot is better for me.

I may add a Vortex Strikefire dot sight when they become available.

Well folks, I went with the Aimpoint M2 and am happy to report that I am delighted with it. To my eyes it is a definite improvement over ironsCool. This weekend I sighted-in at 25 yards and have not yet had an opportunity to try at longer range. I like being able to dial the brightness down so the dot is almost transparent. I have some work to do to retrain myself to keep both eyes open. Now my buddy wants one too.

Thanks to all for your thoughts and options. Of course, I want a SS 10x42 next. Does optics fever pass?Loco

I'm happy to hear that you're happy.
Sorry but optics is an INCURABLE disease, luckily it isn't fatal.

Well, I thought I would throw my 2 cents in here.  I went with the Millett DMS-1.  It seems pretty good so far, but it is not nearly as good as my XTR.  I kind of wish I had spent just a bit more on optical quality, but the next level up in this market is probably the XTR and that is a bit expensive for my tastes.  Maybe the Weaver, Bushnell 4200 or the Leupold Euro models. . .

THe Millet DMS was a close contender, but lost due to incompatibility with my BUIS, and upon consideration of the points made by Zak Smith's excellent article on fighting carbine optics.

This is a little late sorry, another vote for the Aimpoint.

I used to have an old AIMPOINT MARK III and finally upgraded it to a COMPM2. The technology advances are amazing. Aimpoints are very accurate to say the least.
