Which one do you guys like?  I have read a bit about the both of them on this site - but really wanted to know which one resolves better in the lowlight?  This would be my deep woods binocular (where i spend most of my time) - and i would like the bino that has the LEAST amount of eye-fatigue - i appreciate your help!!

thanks
J

Get the Katmai and don't look back.  I spent a good bit of time comparing mine to my Kahles 8X42 in low light.  The Katmais were actually better just before dark.  They are much easier on the eyes than any other binocular I've used.

I just spent a week reviewing a Fury 6.5x32.  It is a tough glass to beat for the money.  What little I've used a Katmi indicates to me that its image is very much like the 6x30 Yosemite, which I have.  There isn't two cents worth of difference between low light resolution between the Yosemite and the Fury, but the Fury is a little brighter untill the light gives out.  Both Fury and Yosemite are usable well past legal shooting hours.  I don't notice a difference in image size untill I get to looking at a couple of miles.  In close I do not notice .5x difference.

I just finished buying the Fury I tested.  You will spend an awful lot of money for very little improvement.  I think your decision probably will come down to the major difference in the two, which is not optics, but size.  The Katmi is going to be noticeably smaller than the Fury, which actually about intermediate in size between the traditional 32 mm frame and the traditional 42 mm frame, while the Katmi is noticeably smaller than the typical 32 mm frame.  That's what I'd make the call on.  I have a Custom 7x26 for a small glass, so I got the Fury.  Makes a good combination with a 10x.

The Fury will be more comfortable for you if you happen to have big hands.  My hands are a little bit above average in size and the Katmi, for me anyway, is starting to get a tad too small.  The Fury is just about perfect in feel for me.

Forgot to add, that Like mywates and the Katmi, the Fury is the easiest on the eyes glass I have used in quite some time.  Also, since you are used to IF glass (the Fujinon you have posted about often), the Fury can be used that way, if you like.  The diopter locks and will NOT move without concious decision and deliberate action on your part, they are hinged very stiffly and the IPD adjustment you use probably won't change in normal use.  The eyecups won't move in normal use either. You can take a chunk of rubber band and stretch it to the point it will slip into the space between the focus knob and the housing, and then the knob will not move.   Takes less than a second to remove the band to use the focus.  However for scanning through layers of brush, I can't fathom IF use.  The Fury is also a heck-for-stout built binocular.

Ok - that leads me to the next couple of questions -

is there 200 dollars difference in the katmai over the yosemine's?

and furthermore, would it be worth 100 more to get the 7x40 IOR bino's over the vortex or katmai?

i know they are IF, and i would prefer the center focus for close focus - but
i know that IOR glass is great.

i still have my fujinon's for general use deer hunting - and they are hard to beat.

i just want a compact for watching birds and the occasional easy deer hunt.

thanks for the info, guys.

I haven't used the Katmis a lot, but there seems to me to be no real difference in the view between them and the Yosemite.  The Katmi is a little more compact than the Yosemite.  The difference between them other than the price is going to boil down to the basic differences inherent in the porro versus roof prism designs.  The Yosemite will flat out amaze you for the kind of optics you get for $90.

If compact is important, the get the Katmai; they are a good bit smaller.  I'd also expect them to be more durable, but the Yosemite is advertised as waterproof.  I would advise staying away from the natural finish.  I got that on my Katmais.  I does look cool, but gets dirty quickly.  I've been looking at inexpensive binocs to leave at my weekend cabin.  I bought the Yosemite 8X30, but eye relief is too short for glasses.  I'm deciding now between the Yosemite 6X30 and another pair of Katmai 6X32.  I'm leaning towards the Katmai now, just because I like them so much and they are such a good value for roof prisms.

I was trying to decide between the yosemite and katmai recently for my wife to use this season.  We tried both and couldnt tell a nickels worth of differenct between the two.  I bought her the yosemites and I like them so much I'm about to order some for myself.  Both were 6x.  $80 well spent.
