I need to outfit a Rem 700 VLS in 223 and another in 243 ... I am pretty sure that I can got $500 past the Boss without too much of an effort. Based on the 2008 Rifle Scope Rankings I have found these three tier 3 scopes that will fit into my budget.
Does anyone use any of these ... if so, what are your thoughts?
I have no idea which may be the best bang for the buck!
All shooting will be done at ranges from 100 to 500 yards. (primarily 200 - 400)
Target size with range from 12oz pop can to 1ltr pop bottle. (read small to medium Prarrie Poodles)
Millett 6-24x44 Buck Gold
Leatherwood 6.5-20x44 Expert
Vortex 6-24x50 Crossfire
Thank you much!

I would be looking used... also check the samplist saw a Nikon 6-18 for 250 there
I would try to get a better quality used scope, Nikon (monarch or buckmaster), Elite 4200, Weaver Grand Slam
have seem some of the Weaver Grand Slam 6-4x20 Varmint scopes going for around 300

I have another suggestion which some may not like, but it has worked for me when I didn't have sufficient funds. Get one BETTER scope and good detachable rings/mounts on both rifles. You can only shoot one at a time anyway. Between the 223 and 243, if you calibrate properly, use the proper ammo, the switch over can be pretty painless. In the $500-600 range, you can find a used high-mid to low-upper ranged scope. Watch the samplelist and sometimes you can run across a GREAT deal. I think sometimes they get slipped in there just to see if anyone is paying attention.
You'll thank me later...

Whoa...didn't say there would never be a need, just that it is relatively easy. However, I switch between my 30-06 and .220 Swift regularly, and am generally sighted in in two shots. I guess to some that may be an imposition, but I am really and truly a cheap *&^&*^%.

And the Swift Primiers are nice scopes. Actually, from what I can find, one of the better "deals" on the market in the lower price ranges. Very crisp optics. I own one.
But I don't have two...
Everyone has different ideas about how to handle the "cost to play" issues. I'm sure that someday I will get tired of swapping 1 scope between two rifles. Maybe when I am OLD, like all you guys seem to be (that is possibly a poor attempt at humor...) JUST KIDDING...

1947mercenary...
I just noticed your cutesy little emoticons.
Below, I didn't even TRY to match ballistics, just chose randomly. I can shoot these in in a matter of minutes, but as I said, with a good selection of bullets, ammo loads, etc, it ain't rocket science. I know, I AM a rocket scientist these days. Keeping a data book is helpful, but a mercenary would know that.
Perhaps in 47 ballistics were different. Maybe you cannot make the adjustment, but I can.

+1 I'm of the same opinion.
Go out & buy a one piece picatinny scope base for each rifle. Next, pic your scope. Finally, buy some $40-50 Burris Xtreme scope rings & mount the scope on the .223. Get it zeroed and "zero" the turrets on your scope. Next, move the scope onto the .243 and fire 2 shots. Adjust to zero & fire a couple of confirmation shots. You should now have TWO zero settings and, since you bought a QUALITY scope, the adjustments should be repeatable between the two rifles within one inch or so (give or take).
This has been my experience with two different rifles this deer season. I had to sell one scope at mid season (for Christmas reasons...long story) & shared one scope between a .260 and a .308. The procedure worked fine for me as I swapped & adjusted back & forth a few times before trying it in the field. Everything came off without a hitch...
Good luck & let us know what you decide to buy...

I'm of the opinion that if I have two rifles, I'm going to have two scopes for those rifles, period.

Always the preferred situation. However, given the choice between two scopes of moderate quality versus one of high quality that could "fairly painlessly" be swapped between the two rifles, I would opt for the higher quality. A matter of preferences and comfort with making changes. Personally, I don't have a problem with hot swapping, some do, and that is AOK. But, as I have seen stated in many posts in this forum and several times recently, "you generally get what you pay for". Much depends on the performance level the buyer/user is looking for.
