Greetings All,

First, I had my first "actual experience" with SWFA today.  I called to buy the 7X40 IOR's on the sample list only to find someone beat me to the punch.  I then called back several times to talk to Chris (leave it to me to call on the busiest day of the year, but he made time for me anyway--great guy).  EVERYONE I talked to was absolutely outstanding, as was the price of the Nikon Action Extreme 10X50's I ended up buying (told you guys I LOVED them), and it was great talking to Chris.  Chris and the folks at SWFA have a customer for life---or at least as long as they keep taking my calls

Koshkin, you seem to be the expert on IOR glass.  Every review I've read, except one, rants and raves about clarity, and more importantly in this case, color rendition.  One review, of a 1995 model, talks about the image being very sharp, but with an amber tint.  When I talked to Chris today, he said much the same about the pair they had on the Sample List-vintage unknown.  Is this something that is common with IOR Binocs?  Is it "older" models?  I'm very intrigued by everything I've seen and read about these, and will probably add a set to my collection eventually no matter what, but I'd like to know what to expect before I buy.  I don't have any retail sources locally that deal in IOR products so I'm not able to see them before I call Chris and pest him to order me a pair.

Thanks in advance for your replies, and thanks again for everything Chris.  It was great talking to you.

I am buy no means an expert an IOR or any other glass, but I do own a pair of 7x40 binoculars.  I do not know the exact vintage on mine (I bought them slightly used), but I think they are at most a couple of years old.  Mine do not have an amber tint (or any tint for that matter).  I know that some European optics had that amber/yellow tint in the past (most notably Swarovski) claiming that it actually helped resolution in low light.  I even heard an expression somwhere "Swarovski Yellow".  The only mention I know of an IOR optic having a yellow tint was that of a gentleman on this very forum saying that his older 10x IOR scope has a yellow tint.  It is quite possible that an older binocular would have the same coatings and tint.   All in all, it comes down to a personal preferance.  I do not like that tint for my purposes.  For hunting it works just fine.  Swarovski changed theur coatings at the request of birdwatchers.  Apparently they are a very big market for high end binoculars and they want to see the bird's true colors.

I like to use my binoculars for general observation, so I prefer no tint.  Also, my binoculars came with snap in amber filters in case you do want that amber tint.  Interestingly with those filters you can see better into the shadows.  I came back from Grand Canyon yesterday and I am still speechless.  I am sure happy I took my binos with me.  What a sight!

Great talkin' to you too.  Have you assassinated any more deer with your squad car?   calm down man I'm Just kidding.

I talked with Val from Valdada today and he told me that the binoculars with the yellow tint used the highest quality Schott glass and are the best binoculars they have ever made.   dang it...I knew I sold them way too cheap.
