Hi!

Ive decided to get a high magnification for my 22. But What should I pick? I want a High quality scope, i shoot a lot with my 22 and i dont want no crap. Scopes I had in mind is:

Bushnell 4200 elite 6-24X40Ao
Nikon Buckmaster 6-18X40
Nikon Monarch 6-24X50

I would like Target knobs wich the nikons have. I want to be able to shoot long range with the rifle, and then i think i need target knobsCool Then what recticle should I have, BDC, Target dot, fine duplex, Mil dot...Whacko Im gone use it for plinking, paper punching and some hunting. The paralax on nikons only goes to 50 y, Problem?
PS. How far do you guys shoot your 22? I was thinking about 50-300yards, is that poosible? Great forum, BTW

leo 6.5x20 extended focus range down to 10 meters, target knobs target dot, bdc are hard with 22 since every manufacture has different ballistics, shoot mostly in the 50 to 100 yd range.

OT...

I just purchase a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 and am quite happy with it.  I didn't want to spend more than $300-400 on a scope for my 10/22 and I felt I made a good choice. My only grip (and a minor one at that), is the slightly bulbous contour of the exit bell which looks fine by itself, until you throw on the sunshade.

The Nikoplex reticle is just fine, for me.  YMMV.

A 22 cal. should not be used for hunting at long distances. I would limit the range out to 75m and at a push 100m. This does not mean that it is not deadly further out, so practise proper safety standards and be aware of what is behind your target. The type of game you should hunt must also be limited to ducks, geese, small antelope (I mean small) and vermin such as rats, crows etc.
As for the choice of scope, there is a lot of choices. You will need the parallax and magnification for accurate target shooting, but not for hunting. 10x for hunting is a lot. Again, unless your rifle is a very accurate varmint or target style rifle, not much benefit will be had from parallax adj and high magn (20X) We are talking here of accuracy levels of shooting into a 0,5cm square at 50m. Hitting a 1cm square at 50m with an accurate 22 should be possible with allmost any scope.
So decide on your exact needs and go for it. A super duper scope on an average rifle will not make you shoot better.
If you go for parallax adj it must be able to adjust to at least 10m, even 5m. Look at the air rifle scopes. Most of the shooting is done up close.
Forget about 300m shots.

i was never talking about hunting at 300 meters, I was talking about target shooting. For hunting I absolutly agree that 75 m with a 22lr is a maximum. Im sorry for the missunderstanding. the thing is, i want to practise shooting in wind, and with a 22 at 200 m the wind is something to thinkabout for hitting the bullseye. I would never shoot at longer distances than 150 m on a living animal no matter what gun I am using...

KfS(Kid from Sweden), I was not sure if you wanted to hunt out to that distance, so I thought I would just caution you. We all hunt, but we try to minimize any possibilty of not killing an animal quickly.
As for target shooting out to 200 or 300m, I think you would have a difficult time of it.
Have a look at this web page: http: http://www.gunsmoke.com/guns/1022/22ballistics.html - www.gunsmoke.com/guns/1022/22ballistics.html

These ballistics are from that site:

Rather then buy a high magnification for shooting at a target up to 75, spend your money on a good quality 3,5-10 or 6-14. Schmidt and Bender at the top, Zeis etc come to mind.
If you are serious about going beyond 75m, in other words 100m, a 9x may be a bit small for precision shooting. At 100m a target the size of a gholf ball will be clearly visible with a 9X, but not a match stick. But at 100m wind and other factors will make precision shooting (splitting match sticks), impossible anyway.

ok thanks. but I do belive a Zeiss is a bit overkill for a 22, I costs around 1500 dollars in sweden. but I thank you for your advice and I will look on a 4-16 or something like that...Wink

The rifle club I used to belong to had a regular event known as a "buffalo shoot." We fired .22 rimfire rifles at metallic silhouettes of a bison  at 300 yards.  It was shaped like a bison but was about the size of a large housecat.  The first time I tried to shoot the course, I ran out of elevation on my old Weaver K6 scoped Remington 541-S long before I got close.  A member loaned me his Sako, which had enough elevation bias in the mount to get his T10 Weaver centered up nicely.  I managed to knock over 19 of the 25 targets to place third of about 25 guys.
We shot from a benchrest on sandbags, so if you held hard it was no great trick IF the ammo was good and IF there wasn't any wind blowing!
 A lot of fun.
