I currently have a Leupold VX II 6x18x40 on my 22-250.  I have been shooting it for 6 years.  It works very well for me.  (I shot praire rats, to call them dogs is wrong).   I have been looking at Leupolds due to previous experience, their varmint reticle and the fact that adjustment are 1/10 MOA.  If this particular scope has been discussed elsewhere, please direct me to it so I do not waste people time with repeats.

I am looking for answers to it the varmint reticle is worth it (delivers on the 300, 400, 500 yard incerment), does having the ability to adjust MOA by 1/10 necessary (has anyone found that is the greates thing since slided bread, because I still hit'm with 1/4)  and what do they think of the cresent objective lense?  If the 1/10 adjustment and the cresent objective are not worth it (can't get bulter creek covers to fit for one thing), 2nd scope in mind was the VX-III in 6.5x20x40.

I appriciate the insight even though it is a darn long question.

John.

I have the Leupold VX111 8,5-25x50 with the varmint reticule. I love it.
I zeroed the center crosshair at 100yds. Then fired a shot using the next cross down, and I was 1.8 inches above bull.
Went to a competition where we shot 200yds, 100yds and 50yds. On 200yds I just used the next cross down and was on the money. Worked for me plain and simple.
I however do not like the looks of the crecent objective. Appears gimmicky to me. Just a personal thing.
Have a good look at 50mm objective. My scope only has 1/4 clicks. 1/10th seems very small increments.

to call them dogs is wrong).
ya it is kind of an insult to dogs.

the varmit reticle is great. the 1/10 clicks are less important in a scope where the adjustment for hold over is done with the reticle rather than dial in, and would be more beneficial with a fine cross hair. leo makes really good, much better, flip ups in the cresent for their scopes, expensive but good.
whether lowering the scope optimally is the best depends alot on the type of stock. if you are using a prone set up with a good check riser, a higher profile of the head on the stock, and a higher ring mount is better as it prevents one from rolling the cheek over the stock. I use a 6x18x40, 6.5x20 vx3, 6.5x30var3,6.5x20x50,mk4 , 4.5x14x50 mk4, 4.5x14x40 var3, althought no vxL . the 6.xx20x40 with a varmit will be so much better than the 6x18, there is no comparison, and may simply be all you need. I'll let you know when I get a v7L. 4x18x56 in varmit.

Next weekend I will be sighting in my new LEUPOLD VXIII LONGRANGE 4.5X14X40 W/VARMINTER RETICAL SIDEFOCUS atop ny ENCORE .50 ML. I have two targets set at 25 and 150yds in my yard. I hunt 50 to 150yd areas normally. I think I made a good choice for my situation. I also find the time to shoot a few times a week since it is off my back porch. What do you guys think?

I had it on a 300H&H Sako. I have just bought a 308 Rem 700 VSF, and it will go onto that. I bought the scope specifically for target shooting.

8Shots and Dale:

Appriciate the feedback.  The more I look at the VX-L, the more I think I will stay with the VXIII.  Glad to hear the Varmint Ret.  works.

Thanks again.  John
