I just purchased a 1946 M70 and I am ECSTATIC!!! This rifle handles beautifully, and shoots even better. I got sub-MOA groups the first time out with factory ammo and a 60 year old 2.5 power Lyman scope. Big Grin

I will likely write up a little more on this wonderful firearm in the firearms section when I have more time. However, I do have a question regarding rings and bases for the time being. I plan on keeping the old G&H sidemount and Lyman scope as the primary hunting setup (haha I'm nostalgic I guess) but I also wanted to set it up so I could reign in as much accuracy as possible at the bench and if I decide to do any "bean-field" style hunting this coming deer season.

So far, I am thinking I want to get a Quick Detach ring&bases combo. Looking around I found the Leupolds for sale here and just wanted to make sure this mounting system is compatible with the factory drilled holes I have in the top of my receiver.

This is the setup I am potentially looking at:

http://swfa.com/Leupold-Quick-Release-2-Piece-Base-P1024.aspx

I noticed that the bases for the Express length receiver are specified for pre and post 1964 styles...is this an issue for standard long action receivers and if so where are the correct bases for my rifle listed because I can only seem to find these?

Do you want a quick detach base or quick detach rings? You might also find a zero problem each time you take the scope/s on and off?

Maybe go with a quick release rings and leave the base in place?

Then too, I may be a tad mixed up on what exactly your wanting to do. I know you said something about leaving the old set up on? So I'm not sure if the bases would interfere in that set-up or not.

As far as if they're compatible with the rifle, I think it lists the rifles it fits off to the right. Otherwise Leupolds website should have this info as well?

If not, Weaver may make something similar that would work also and they'll list what it fits. But like I said, Leupold should also?

Yes it is an issue.  The express bases are for the H&H length receivers.  You will have to get regular bases for the Model 70.....( I am assuming this is not an H&H...)

Ed,
I figured it might be a problem, but I could only find the express length bases listed for Pre-64 M70s. As far as what I am trying to do, I want to set up the rifle so I can alternate between the current optics system (G&H side mount with lyman alaskan 2.5x) and QD bases with rings for a standard modern one inch scope tube.

The reason for this is that I want to be able to get a little more magnification for target shooting and I would also like to have a scope less prone to fogging etc if the weather gets bad. I plan on keeping the original set-up unless the situation calls for something different such as the situations I just mentioned.

Just look at the Winchester Model 70 bases.....you may see bases listed for serial numbers under 66,000.....those are the pre-war bases for the pre war receivers which had different hole spacing....the Express bases are for the hole spacing for the H&Hs......                                                I think!!.....Bucky

But if you have a Post War Model 70----the modern spacing will fit......( unless it is an H&H )        Whacko
