I just got a SS 3-9.  This is my first FFP scope.  As I saw in a review somewhere, the recticle seems to be useful both at 3x and at 9x.  However, I can see that if it appeared much smaller (i.e. at 3x) it wouldn't be useful at the low end.  Or, if it was much bigger (i.e. at 9x) it wouldn't be very useful there either.

What I am asking, is say you have a magnification ratio of 4x (say a 3-12x)or 5x (3-15x) or even 6x, eventually it seems like one end of the spectrum would become essentially useless, as the recticle would either be too small, or too large.

I am not communicating well, but hopefully you get my point.

Is there a "maximum useful magnification ratio" for FFP scopes?  I realize that this would depend on the recticle, but given common designs, what is your experience?

Thanks.

It's entirely dependent upon reticle design.  The higher the ratio, the more difficult it becomes to make a reticle work at both ends, but it's not impossible.  And a poorly designed reticle may not work well even with a 3:1 ratio.  So you can't assume a lower magnification ratio will be an advantage--it all depends upon how well the reticle was designed.

becoming useless is probably a relative term as the use isn't being defined. Mostly your talking about tactical, or special purpose target scopes here, not so much hunting scopes although they could be used for hunting. The 6 times erector on the 3x18 IOR is a bit to much for me, as is the low end on the SB 5x25. However the EBR-2 reticle on my Vortex HD is outstanding, providing a fast quick site picture on 5 and with the illumination on could be used on a carbine type and the heavier bars disappear on the highest setting for bisection of the target at longer ranges, although the erector range is only 4. PH and USO have a good combination of everything. Although the z6 group of scopes are sfp, the design of some of the reticles would be pretty bad if they were ffp.
