That is nice.

I do love the 300WM.

Ted,
I'm not asking for a comparison or "who's best".  There are a number of FINE custom actions out there.  Just wondering what points drove you to select the Defiance over the several other fine quality, highly reliable actions.  I suspect some custom aspect that other "custom" action builders may not offer for selection, but could be other.  Just wondering.  I like what I've seen of the Defiance actions, but have not had opportunity to shoot one.  Only one I've handled was very smooth in operation, but once again, no shooting time.

The origin of these 2 rifles began last fall when my brother, his business partner and I were hunting in south Texas. One morning at breakfast, my brother asked me if I'd build him a rifle. As I was discussing what he wanted and how much he was willing to spend, I began narrowing down a component list that I felt would best satisfy his needs and the compromises he was willing to make, since a couple of his wants kinda conflicted with each other. One aesthetic thing he mentioned was that he liked the look of spiral fluted bolts. He also wanted a combination LR precision rifle and hunting rifle that wasn't "too" heavy that he could take elk hunting. This led to the decision to not go too heavy on barrel contour, the selection of .300 Win Mag, a stock that was a good hybrid of tactical & hunting styles, sloped rail, capable tactical style scope that was also not "too" heavy, etc. My brother's business partner decided on the spot that he too would like a rifle setup the same way, so what started out as a casual conversation with my brother turned into a request to build 2 rifles. I seem to have some kind of mystical force that causes folks who hang around me for more than a few minutes to suddenly have the urge to buy more guns. Or so I've been told.

Anyway, given the above requirements, the Defiance Deviant Tactical action was selected for 4 main reasons:
- It had the fluted bolt he wanted
- It has integral, machined-in 20 MOA rail and integral recoil lug, which are obviously superior to separate components.
- It's a damn good, extremely well-machined action with slick bolt operation, well finished with no discernible tool marks anywhere.

And most importantly....

- Southern Precision Rifles happened to have 2 RH Deviant Tac actions in stock, with no wait. Given they wanted to hunt with these rifles this fall sealed the deal.

Most all the custom actions are very nice, and it's hard to go wrong with any of them. I have at least 1 action from most of the major players and have been very pleased with all. I like the Defiance actions better than most for a hardcore LR precision rig due mainly due to the integral rail and recoil lug, which really makes for a stiff action.

This in red is true and for some odd reason's creamed corn.. Odd

The fluting on the bolt works my OCD...It is fluted backwards or so it seems.. Nothing major as they ARE the best on the market at this point in time.

Admit it, you just enjoy saying "creamed corn..."

I never gave much thought to the spiral flute direction, but now that you mention it, it is backwards from some other actions.

Crap! Not only is Ted a gun salesman, but he's a custom rifle builder to boot.
Either I need to go visit Ted or avoid him like the plague.

REALLY nice job on those rifles Ted.

You and bigdaddy ever discussed going into business together?

I have always admired the Cooper rifles.  I think those are the best looking rimfires I've ever seen.

Coopers are beautiful rifles, but what impresses me is performance. I got to look at some Coopers in a gun shop in western Ky., each came with a 100yd target with a 5 round group fired from that rifle. Almost every target had a one hole group. I was impressed.

Performance is always the #1 "quality" of a rifle... but it doesn't hurt if it looks good while doing its job.

Who would you rather see washing cars in a bikini... Roseanne or Paris Hilton???  I'm certain they could both wash the car...

Depends on if I came to get a clean car, or watch my car get washed.

Yep, I've seen it. I'd be in line to watch my car get washed daily if she was washing it. Who cares if it's clean, as long as she gets wetNaughty

Actually, those Cooper test targets are fired at only 50 yards, as that's the max distance they can get inside their facility. That takes nothing away from their quality, beauty, and usual excellent accuracy, though those test targets are a bit misleading.

It's been a long time since I was at that dealer's store, but knowing they were fired at 50yds makes a big difference.
