I offered to scope my brother-in-laws BL-22.  He rarely shoots (I've never known him to shoot this rifle which is ~30 years old), but would like to start going to the range once a month or so.

I had some tip off rings on a Marlin, and a scope, but the bell on it is to big to fit without removing the rear sight on the Browning, and I would rather just buy something sound.

So, what do you recommend for a 25-50 yard paper punching rig?

I wouldn't scope that rifle at all, personally.  It's such a light, handy, fast little lever action, and to me, a rifle like that is perfect for iron sights.  I have a BL-22.  I used to have a scope on it, but removed the scope years ago.  I prefer shooting it with irons.

When it comes to lever actions, I'm old school.  Unlike pretty much all other rifle types, I really don't like scopes on any lever action.

I agree with Ted about irons on the lever action.  Get your BIL to get a cheap rimfire bolt gun like the savage.  They can be found for a few hundred and he'd have a much better gun to scope.  If you still think scoping this is the only option the nikon pyro mentioned is good and also there is a vortex crossfire rimfire model that may work

My BIL is disabled and cannot see well enough to shoot with irons.  He was in an industrial accident in the 80's (which probably explains why the gun has not been shot), and has been on disability and a settlement annuity ever since.

I see a Nikon 4x on the sample list.  Thanks for the help.

Nevermind about the irons then.  Hopefully he will get back into it and yall can start shooting more together.

I think a weaver V3 1-3x20 would look great on it.

I like the Nikon Prostaff 4x also - it is much better than its price.

However, for the BL-22, a little jewel of a rifle (particularly the older version, which does not have a plastic trigger guard like the new  one), I would try to get a smaller, lighter scope on it. My vote would probably go for the Leupold VX-II 2.5-7x28 Ultralight, which is a diminutive 9.9" and 9.9oz. compared to the 11.3" of the Nikon Prostaff.

On  the other hand, the Leupold retails for $330, when the Prostaff can be had under $100 - I recently found one used for $50.

Weaver 1-3x20 would look good, everything else would feel and look out of balance on a rimfire lever rifle.
