I am about to setup a new Tikka in .223. This rifle will be a calling rifle.  Now, I don't plan on doing any long range target work or lr field work for that matter.  Yotes @ 250 yds max. maybe. Now, I know that a lot of guys will just put a 14-16x something on a .223.  BUT, do I really all that power and cost?  In the May issue of American Hunter they were touting the old 3x9 workhorse.  In the article the author stated that the 3x9 was good for anything out to 300 yards.  At 9x a target at 300 yards would appear just 33 yards away ( seems like enough mag. to me). The 3x was lighter and more compact than the 14-16x models and that the 3x models wouldn't suffer from loss of light that the higher mag. models would (at higher mag.).  Besides all that there is the cost.  Sure could upgrade to better optics in a lower power model.  What ya think?

It is a personal choice.  If you think that 3-9x provides enough magnification for you, than go with it.  I tend to side with lower power scopes myself, but I know others who prefer a higher top end.

Generally, I have a high mag 6-24x on my varmint gun and either a 3-9x (or something in the ballpark) or a fixed 4x or 6x on everything else.

Just get the best quality scope that you can afford.

If the Tikka is stainless call Beretta customer service before firing.  There is a recall of about 5000 serial numbers (my new gun is in the range).

I had my scope cranked down to six power on the last one I shot at about one hundred fourty yards. A  little more field of view might have helped...  It was a smaller female yearling so I guessed a little further on the range.  Three power was too little dog. Nine power was too much bean field. Six power I could find the dog and get the hit.

About 200 yards is the zero for that rifle normally. A class fixed 4 power may serve you too. YMMV

Nope, It's a Left hand model.  They don't make the T3 in left hand.  It's a M595.  WDO

Higher mag. optics provide more leeway in the work up of handloads. This is precision shooting as opposed to accuracy. A 3 min red dot on a Tasco will work on 8 " plates at 250 yds all day long. On guns that tend to have a more built in accuracy advantage higher mag makes more sense. You don't have to use it. Keep your 6.5x20 on 9 power if you like. (or 6 or 8). The decrease in light is not function of the range of the scope but the exit pupil at that mag. a 6.5x24 at 9 power has the same as a 3x9 at 9 cateris paribus.
