Ok guys here is the deal I just purchased a 35 whelen that will probably end up beiing my goto rifle. The rifle will be used for deer as well as elk and bear.  I currently have a 3.3x10x44 nikon monarch adjustable objective on the end of the bell.
what I want to know is I am also considering  the nikon primos 3x9x40 with bdc for 199.00
I thought that since the 35 whelen has considerable more drop the bdc might be nice because I could back all the way out to around 500 yards and record where each circle actually works for my load and then record that on my stock for quick reference.
The last scope is probably over kill, but it is such a good deal, I am really considering it.
It is a nikon gold 30mm  2.5x10x50. This scope is new at a local dealer for $535.00 cash
Its the last gold he has and he wants to get rid of it because he had trouble moving these more expensive scopes, and this is his last one.  Times are tough, but this is almost too good of a deal to pass up.  Let me know what scope you guys would put on  this gun.

boy thats pretty good price for the gold i would be pretty tempted to buy it just cause its a good deal. i dont think anything is wrong with the monarch you already have either though. the bdc is an ok scope i have one myself, but the gold would be a step up over both scopes.

The 35 whelen is a 250-300yd gun, the energy is there but, the trajectory falls off pretty fast.  I think a 3x9 power range is great for the whelen and the three scopes you listed are great scopes, though I don't believe the BDC will be that usefull.

Personally, I would not buy the Primos.  I would however, buy the Gold Monarch and that is a good price.  A 2.5-10x50, 30mm tube Nikon is a scope that I would be pleased to own, is high quality and is something that I would use for a long time.  The only issue with me would be needing a 10x scope for the .35 Whelen.  Of course , you can always switch this scope out with something else for that particular rifle.

I just bought a .338 Federal and am considering what scope to put on it.  The rifle is a Sako Model 85.  My rifle would really be suited to a 2.5-8x32 Zeiss Conquest or maybe a high quality 6x scope, IMHO.

The Zeiss would be great on the whelen and offer plenty of magnification. Same the thing for the .338 fed.

The 35 Whelen is a good round but 300 yards is where you would need to use hand-loads like a 180 grain BT so you can hit hard at the 500 yard mark. The Nikon Gold is a better scope than the Team Primos Monarch.I have a Bushnell 3200 Elite 3-9x50 30mm tube with the post #4 reticle that I bought a few years ago for less than $300 dollars that has been a good low light woods gun.

That's how I see it, too.  As such, I topped my Whelen with a 4x32 Zeiss Conquest.  It's got the clarity for low light, the durability for the cartridge, and I like the slim & trim scope (eyepiece notwithstanding) up on top of the rifle:  great handling.

If I were shooting anything smaller than deer, I'd likely have gone to a 2-7, or maybe a 3-9.  For deer, elk, & moose, I feel that 4x is just the ticket.  I also happen to feel it's an amazing piece of glass for the $$$.

Good Luck,

The Conquest 4x is a great choice... I got one for my .458 and love it so far.

I topped my .35 Whelen (700 Classic) with Vari-x III 3.5x10x40 because (1) I already had it (2) It wasn't on a rifle and (3) AR has a statewide 3 point rule and the extra magnification has come in handy on a couple of occaisions.  That being said, most of the deer, coyotes and hawgs killed with this rifle were shot at 3.5X.  It's been working well and I don't want to fix what aint broke.  I think a low power variable would be the best choice for a .35 Whelen.
