I'm buying a scope for a .243 GHog rifle.  I want the 50mm objective for the larger exit pupil at high magnification so that eye placement isn't as critical.  With that in mind, which scope would you pick?  If you have a different reccomendation, throw it in the mix.

Burris 6.5-20x50 Fullfield II  $369 (Competitor)

Fine Plex / 14.5" / 19 oz / 3.1" ER / 7.6-2.6 EP

Burris 4-16x50 Black Diamond 30mm  $559.95  A little out of the price range.  Is it really worth it over the others?

Plex / 15.7" / 21.9 oz / 3.3" E.R. / 3.1 EP

Bushnell 4-16x50 Elite 4200  $445.99 (Competitor)

Multi-X / 15.6" / 22 oz / 3.6" ER / 3.1 EP

Bushnell 5-15x50 Elite 3200  $299.99 (Competitor)

Multi-X / 15.9" / 19 oz / 3.4" ER / 3.3 EP

Sightron 6.5-20X50 SII Side Focus  $489 (Competitor)

Plex / 14.6" / 20.5 oz / 3.4" E.R. / 2.5 EP

Of course there's the Var-X III and Conquest models in this bracket, but they're out of my price range.

For the money, Sightron is the best.

Of the ones you listed, optically, Elite 3200 is the worst, Fullfield II is a little better (I use this one on my 22-250). Elite 4200, Sihgtron and Black Diamond are comparable optically and better than Elite 3200 and Fullfield II.  Black Diamond is the only one with a 30mm tube so it has more adjustment range. However, it is not a comparable model due to lower magnification range. Sightron has some of the best adjustments anywhere.  Elite 4200 has Rainguard.    All three are excellent scopes and it all comes down to what is more important for you.  I see no need for a 30mm tube on a varminter.  I'd add Burris Signature Slect to the list.  It compares more directly with S2 and Elite 4200.  If you expect a lot of rain and humidity or very cold weather, Elite 4200's Rainguard is important.  For dry conditions I would personally go with SIghtron.

You can't really go wrong with any one of these three.

I don't know why everyone likes varible scopes.  I started groundhog hunting with a varible and hated it.  The second year I put a Leupold fixed 24x on the gun and it hasn't failed me in 25 years.   I do own varible scopes but for target and varmint hunting I like a high power fixed power.

My choice would be a Weaver T4 in 24x or a Leupold FX3 in 12x.   Go with a fixed power and I guarantee you'll have less misses.

My varmint rifles are fixed power Leupolds in 24x and 36x.

Well, if your last experience with a variable scope was 25 years ago, you should probably revisit the scope market.  Variable scopes have come a long way in the last quarter century.  I like fixed magnification scopes for hunting/tactical rifles (I currently own eight fixed magnification scopes with magnifications of 2.5x, 4x and 6x), but for a varmint gun I prefer a variable.  None of my variables exhibit point of impact changes when I change magnification (at least not enough of a change to be noticeable with me shooting, maybe I am just not a good enough shot) and I am not talking about scopes that cost a couple of grand.  I can't afford to put those in every gun I have.  The bulk of my optics consists of various mid range scopes from Burris, Sightron and others that cost anywhere between $200 and $500 when new.

For target shooting with a target of known size at a known distance with generally decent lighting a high magnification target scope is a good way to go.  For varmint shooting at a tiny target at random distances with varying lighting and with mirage a factor, being to dial down on the  magnification has advantages.

Anyhow, to each his own.  It sounds like a fixed 24x scope is working well for you although it might not work as well for others.
