I can't help you with exactly where to go, but I hunt a lot of public land (the counties I hunt in Va. are all 50% public land or higher).

See if there is are any national forest lands, those tend to be larger tracts than state land.  States tend to buy smaller tracts.  If you can find national forest, I'd go there.  The USFS has maps that they will sell you.  Also you can order a gazetter (sp?) of the state and that will list public land, so will Google earth.

I don't hunt small tracts much because they tend to be over-hunted.  And if it's easy for you to walk in to a good area, it's easy for somebody else to do it so you'll probably be in a crowd.

Oh, and they always kill good deer in Ohio, so I'd look at the west end first.

hope that helps.

i've lived in Pa all my life and the stories you've read about all the deer in Pa are definitely a history lesson. you will be hard pressed to SEE a deer on the big northern tracks of mountains now. there used to be a great number of deer but the last 10 years that has changed. there are very few deer on public hunting areas now. one side benifit of this is the quality of the bucks is much better.

You'll find the answers posted to your question are unfortunatley correct especially for rifle season.  The state game lands are packed with people. The state forest land opened to hunting have a very low deer denisity.  Your only hope would be bow season.  If you decide to hunt PA focus on southern PA in small patches of woods around civilization.  Northern PA big woods have very few deer anymore.

the deer herd in PA is still large I drive twenty miles to work and in that area I can see anywhere from thirty to sixty deer at any given time.there is just to much private ground that's posted and deer are not stupid they know where it is safe and where to go.My neighbor who owns a farm and his ground is next to a large tract of land that is a wildlife sanctuary owned by a group of lawyers for their hunting pleasure and it is nothing to go spotlighting at night and see  a hundred or more deer and really nice bucks ten points or larger.Everyone blames the game commission but the deer are out their and most people only go about a hundred or so yards from any road to hunt, you have to go deep into the  woods to get the deer and be smarter then them

Well, that's true.  After 100 years of the hunters shooting at everything that had testicles, the Game Dept. finally decided to put a band aid on the situation and made a ( gasp ) ANTLER RESTRICTION [  Eek  ].......well, " kind of ".......the poor deer had to have THREE LITTLE POINTS on only ONE antler to be legal.....( Why didn't they just go ahead and say:  EIGHT POINT OR BETTER..?  )

There ARE deer in Pennsylvania.....and after several years now of everyone griping and complaining; there SHOULD be a couple of three year olds in this state now--- for the first time since 1910.

But you still have the Pennsylvania Hunter Mentality out there---which is disgraceful.

I would still suggest you go to Colorado or Wyoming just to get away from these hunters.
