Yes they can.

I have even seen .22 handgun barrels shot out, and in one case in a Hämmerli 208.

But the whole gun was shot out, numerous cracks all over.

I have no idea how many rounds there was put trough it but surely no less than a number of 100000 rds.

The barrel looked like someone had beadblasted it inside.

I have seen and changed out a number of SIG P210 barrels shot ot as well, mostly due to military Subgun ammo, but I belive a 9mm barrel with outstanding accuracy get no older than 40000-60000 rds.

On the contrary my wifes 1936 luger still shoots within 2" at 25 meters even though rifling not can be seen in the barrel.

Yes they can, especially the flame throwers out there. No doubt some of the specialty guns shooting the hot bottleneck cartridges would be hard on barrels.

My 35 year old N frame .357 Mag is showing some wear around the forcing cone. This has to be from the hot, expanding gases. It might be a cool show when shooting in marginal light, but that huge flash at the cylinder barrel gap has to cause wear. I do measure the gap on all my revolvers occasionally and have not seen change other than the M28. I always check the Freedom Arms M83, but don't shoot it enough. It has been at .001"  for each cylinder since I bought it. The .454 is too obnoxious to shoot enough for me to cause damage. I think the larger the gap, the larger the damage that would occur. That's just seat of the pants thought on that one.

With auto pistols, my 1943 1911 definitely shows wear as does a 1950ish barrel I have on a BHP. I can't comment on it affecting accuracy because I don't use them for bullseye. They still shoot center of dirt bag @ 7 yards. Glocks and HKs I haven't seen anything, yet.

If there is friction and hot expanding gases, there will be wear...............

Raging hornet went from 1-2" groups to 3-4" at about 1000 rds. Noticable erosion at corners of forcing cone.

Was set back refaced and forcing cone recut. 35 gr pills at 2600 fps 13.6 grs 296 rifle primers.

454 Casuall Redhawk forcing cone went bad at 1000 hot and 2000 lead'

357 Dan Wesson Maximum (2nd) barrel went bad after 1000 rds.

357/44 Bain and Davis Ruger Blackhawk went at 2000 rds.

stop counting model 19's--never had a 27 go bad

alot of IPSC shooters report 38 supers going at about 30,000 rds, (IPSC gun considered bad if it won't shoot 2 in at 50 yds). My personal 38 guns usually blew the lower lugs or would no longer headspace reliably.

have had 45 IPSC show signs of headspace rounding at 10,000 rd. and of course top lug rounding.

It would seem that the forcing cone is to the revolver  as lands are to rifles.

And the head space edge in pistols is to---------?
