I remember years ago reading about those big girls.  If I recall correctly the powder charge was 600 lbs of cordite.

You really need to see the muzzle from about 80 feet in front of it, We refueled from the New Jersey once when they turned the turret at us and recommended we take DEEP COVER as to the means of transferring shot line.  Their Skipper had a warped sense of humor.

I have heard it will push the ship back 20+ feet when the blast off. Thats got to rock everything within a mile away.

BD, it doesn't push it in the water but the blast does vibrate the hull so much it looks like it does.

I would say real. Hard to say just which ship. I was on the Big Mo and have seen and felt a broadside. One can actually see the projectile as it travels to target. The blast and heat wave is impressive. A full broadside all nine rifles (they are called Naval rifles) will move the ship about 16 feet sideways. What is really funny is to see all of the none exsisting dust from the compartment you just cleaned appear every where after one of these lights off.. LOL

The rifling by the way is quite fast many lands and grooves actually rather shallow. Big brass rings on the projectile to grip the rifling. One can fire them from the turret, a butt handle and trigger from a 45 1911AI one at each barrel.

Smith. Thanks for sharing. I thought I read it did push the ship side ways a little. I must say that is awsome.

I was homeported with the MO and the New Jersey in Long Beach, did a lot of NGFS with both,  They re-arranged the shoreline of Point Oscar multible times.  The picture that Mike650 post shows the effects of the blast on the water and the ship,  Look at the wake, the ship doesn't slide in the water as much as it vibrates.  The impressive part is get a picture of one right after WWII.  All the small guns (5 inch) and anti-aircraft mounts on top of the turrets.  How would you like to have that for a GQ station during a heavy NGFS engagement?  The side blast could be fatal.
