Nice pics!  Robison R-22 or is that a 44?

I absolutely love flying! Big%20Smile I can't wait till I can fly full time.
I like to fly also, but fixed wing never really turned me on like helicopters. I've always had a great love for them. Always wanted to become a pilot. Have all the FAA training books, but could'nt ever take it to the next step. I've always dreamed of having my own helipad with an MD 500 parked on it. My family always looked at me like I was nuts. Oh well.  Your a lucky man doing what you do, it's the ultimate job in my book.

Yellowdog,  it is a R44.  R22s don't do so well up here in Montana.  Air is a little too thin for them.  The MD 500 is a nice helicopter.  There is one that I see flying up here every now and then.  Fast little maching, but I like the looks of the huey better.  There is just something about the looks and the classic whop whop that just gets me going!  The only fixed wing that looks like a blast to me is crop dusting and aerobatics.  That and a military jet.  But none of that can give me the thrill of putting a helo into a tight spot on top of a mountian.

Andy, just make sure you can get the thing OUT of the tight spot!!!!
An old pilot told me any landing you walk away from is a good landing, any landing you can reuse the aircraft is a GREAT landing.  LOL

Very true words.  I haven't been stuck, almost did, but decided to do a go around and then aborted the landing and went a little lower.  Would have been a long day waiting for it to cool down so we could get out.  Big%20Smile

Not that I know of.  The only flying I have done down there is in the Torrance area a little bit, and then from there into LAX low level along the coast.

Pressure altitude is a killer there.  I once had to circle around the airfield (Cessna 182) for 45 minutes to gain enough altitude to get "out" of the valley.  Fortunately, I had spoken with some of the local military pilots before going there and knew what to expect.  Once when landing there, I hit a downdraft...2000fpm, which bottomed out at about 800ft.  THAT was one of the scariest rides I ever had.

Yikes    What was your altitude before you found the bottom? Or do you remember. One or those things "your in it before you know it". Suprising what some pleasure craft can handle sometimes. Glad you had 800 to bring it in.

I was at about 4000ft AGL when the bottom fell out.  The fact it happened wasn't too scary, had already experienced similar (happens a lot in/around the Sierras) and been briefed on it.  What was scary was after pushing the nose, max throttle, heading for the "edge", seemed like the edge was never going to get there.  800 ft is NOT THAT FAR AGL when you are falling that fast.  Then, of course, you have to pull up.  One mil pilot told me he hit 3 in a row,  in the T-34.

I have seen drops of 2000 fpm a few times, but those were on purpose (autorotations).  Does get a little scary when you aren't expecting it and you are only 500 up.  Not much a helicopter can do if it really gets caught in a bad down draft that last for a while.

I am assuming you mean density altitude instead of pressure altitude.  Just a guess.  It would be fun to fly the sierras some time.

I have a friend that got an early retirement from his job. At the time he was learning to fly helos (he was already a fixed wing flight instructor). He has since started working part time as a helo pilot for his instructor, and he loves it. He's a rating junkie and could fly for UPS but he likes what he's doing and wouldn't change a thing.Loco
