He also said spend as much on your scope as on your rifle.  I wonder how many do that?

I've been here long enough that I trust the regulars. Same goes for the magazines. You have to run everything through the B.S. filter no matter where the information comes from.

For the extra bucks, I don`t think there is alot to be gained by going with the VX3!.................Whatcha think,,, mwyates??

The 1.5-5 VariX-III I had on my .375 was straight tubed and was great for that gun. I was still able to shoot until last light, but it wasn't as good as a 4200. It fit the gun perfectly.

Shocked        ( I'm gettin' DIZZY from all yer FLIP-FLOPPIN', Big Squeeze!!!)       Bucky

I think it's worth the extra bucks to go with the VX-III. You get better coatings ( Leupold's myterious Index Matched Lens System!!  Shocked ) and you can get the 1.5X5X scope [ which is really a 4.5X but we won't tell anybody].

Next, you're gonna tell us you changed your mind and are getting a 218 Bee!!!

You could always go with this one if you could accept the 30mm tube.  http://bushnell.com/general/riflescopes_elite4200_42-1424m.cfm
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

That 4200 is a nice scope, especially the 30mm tube. I just hate that battery and illumination unit that looks like an add on.
I like the Kahles illuminated scopes. They look like they have a third turret instead of those aberrations on the ocular bell.

I really like the way that Burris does this, They have an outer ring on the side focus that is the rheostat.

No doubt a good performer and it looks good, too. Just don't shoot that .375 from prone with the 3.1" eye relief.
Meopta have been advertising quite a bit in some of the small time hunting magazines I get like Predator Extreme.

I just got my 1.5-5x vx-III in to mount on my new CZ 550 Safari Magnum in a 458 Win. Mag..  I bought the Leupold because of the guarantee.  In a hard kicker, if it breaks, I want to have somebody that really stands behind their product and in this case, Leupold was definitely going on the rifle.  I just got it in from SWFA, but am waiting on the grooved Warne QD rings.

Ah, good point I did not even look at that.  The IOR only has 3.75 too.  So scratch those.

It fit the gun perfectly.[/QUOTE] ...........................So what do I do? Keep my 3x9 Elite 4200 (now for sale on SWFA) for the 375? The 4200 is do-able. But for FOV, quick acquisition & eye relief reasons, it`s not the best choice for that rifle!.........I don`t plan and cannot foresee any really low lite scenarios! The current VX2 and 3 lines have been improved over the older Vari X`s........On the current VX3 1.5-5x20, I notice that its eye relief goes from 3.8" on full magnification and up to 5.3" for the lowest magnification! On the high power, one needs to stretch the neck like a turkey? However, on the VX2 1-4x20, the eye relief is from 3.8" to 4.3"; a better variance IMO............I also notice in the specs. that the true "actual maginfication" for the 1.5-5x20 VX3 set on 5x, is really not a 5x! It is actually a 4.5X.......The 1-4x20 VX2 is really a 4.2X on the high end and 1.6x on the low end! The only real gain on the high end between the two is only 3/10ths of 1X....Whoopie!Yippee

I've never had a problem with the eye relief.
I am sure Dolphin will appreciate the VariX-III on a .458!

I am just waiting for the rings, brass and reloading dies to make some handloads and I will give a try.  I am going to load some 300, 350 and 405 grain bullets first and use them for bear hunting next year.  A little over kill, but it will get the job done.  If I ever get to Africa or Alaska, I will load up some big boys.
