I have recently purchased a Savage Model 12 BR rifle and a Ruger No.1V. I want to use both for target shooting. I am confussed as to just what scopes to purchase. My plan is to put a Leopold
VX-3 8.5-25x50mm LRT on the Ruger and a Nightforce 8-32x56 BR on the Savage. I have been reading about S3 Sightrons in similar powers and also other scopes.  So I am not sure which ones to purchase. I have read that the Sightron is as good as the Nightforce for less money. Can anyone comment on this?

i think the NF has a slight advantage on the sightron but I dont' believe that it is a twice the $$$ worth.  IMO

How accurate the statement is depends on the definition of the term "as good as."

I ran a 6-24X side-by-side with a 5.5-22X (Nightforce NXS) and would say the glass is comperable in clarity and sharpness.  The Sightron had a smaller "sweet spot", meaning eye position was more critical.

Personally, I think, for a bench scope, it would be hard to beat the Sightron for value; however, I like Nightforce's turrets more (more resistance in the clicks, better spacing between clicks), and I like Nightforce's reticle options.

If "as good as" means glass quality, they are probably about equal.  Depending on your reticle and how picky you are about turrets, the Sigtron is a good buy.

For a bench gun, I'd put a Sightron on and spend the extra money on ammo: nothing beats practice.

The S3 is a great scope. For the money it's a bargain.I know a few guys that say that the S3 Sightron may be the best scope in it's class for long range shooting and better than the Night Force in performance.
