Pileated woodpeckers are large and make a racket. Their loud call and jack hammering on a tree is a welcome sound when deep in the woods.
Walter Lantz had Woody's call down pretty good if you've ever heard a real one.

We have "acorn woodpeckers" up north where we hunt. Doug, your right, they are a welcoming sound throughout the day. It's one of the familiar sights and sounds that have followed me throughout all my years of hunting and fishing up there.

I'd say it had a nest in there.

Further digging into this shows the bird to be a Crimson-crested Woodpecker. http://www.oiseaux.net/birds/crimson-crested.woodpecker.html
The snake is a yellow-bellied Puffing Snake and it was raiding the woodpeckers nest for eggs.

Where do you find those kind of snakes Doug?    We have woodpeckers with a very distinctive white ring around its neck....Red head and black body... They are very pretty but destructive!
