Hello.  I'm looking for light weight pair of binoculars for hiking.  I don't go that often, so I'd like to stay under $150.  I ran across these 8x21 Pentax binoculars and liked the fact that they are 7.4 oz.  Has anyone had experience with them?  Are there other binoculars that are light weight in my price range that you would recommend?

Thanks for your help.

Haze,

How lightweight do you want to go. 7.4 ounces has to be one of the lightest binoculars I have ever seen. I don't think you will find many in that weight range. 10-14 ounces is still considered lightweight though.

Having said that I would suggest a pair I recently acquired on everyone's favorite auction site. They are the Dakota Elite 7x28s. They are currently on clearance from one of the camera stores for $19.99 plus $9 shipping. Original cost was $109. Weight is 13 ounces.

If you would prefer to go with a more-known company then consider the Nikon Prostaff 8x25s. Very good optical performance with a price that typically goes in the $90 range. Weight is right around 13 ounces as well.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Frank.  I'll check out your recommendations.  I'm sure there have to be tradeoffs between light weight and quality.  I guess I'm looking for that point where respectable quality meets small/light.  After doing some reading today, I do think I would be happier with a pair with a slightly larger objective, similar to the ones you are recommending.  I also think I should get a pair that is waterproof.

Thanks for you input.  Take care.
