Hello... I just signed up on this forum. I have surfed SWFA many times both for myself and for friends wondering about scopes.
I am torn between leaving my old Marlin 30-30 as is with the plain open sights. Or, going back to putting a small scope on it with the low profile Weaver base & rings that I still have for it.
My old 30-30 used to wear a real old Glenfield 4x32 scope but it broke and lost it "zero" a few seasons ago, so I took it off along with the Weaver base. So, I got used to using the plain open sights and love the classic "old school" feel of a lever action rifle. But I guess with the new Hornady LeverEvolution rounds, I am considering going back to a scope on my 30-30. But I don't know... I'm thinking about it.
I doubt if I will ever shoot beyond 100 yards with my 30-30, and routinely hunt in the thick woods and briars/thickets. In fact, during the Thanksgiving holiday, I took a small buck (3 pointer) at 75 yards with my 30-30 with open sights and dropped the little guy in his tracks.
Thanks for any advice on a small compact scope for a 30-30.

My budget is whatever my wife will allow! ha ha ha
I hunt from a Summit Viper treestand and also hunt from the ground (fallen trees, blinds) when conditions are right. I've done deer drives before too and would need something light, fast, and quick to get on target. Lowlight isn't too big of an issue, but it would be nice to be able to see clearly down the other side of a ridge when the sun goes down.
Thanks.... Butch |

well - for a 30/30 i wouldn't go over a 50mm (actually I would, but most wouldn't)
try a meostar if you can squeeze that out of your wife (not literally)
- i just bought the 56mm and LOVE it - i considered this scope against zeiss and swarovski - and went w/ this one. no regrets.
good luck. i have a 50mm scope on my 30/30.......what's another 6mm's ???

Thanks... But, I don't know... A 40mm scope might be a little big for a 30-30.

If low light is not an issue, think about a peep sight.
