I think I can get a pair of PENTAX DCF SP 8X43 brand new for around $325.00 shipped. I know that these are good binos but Ive never seen a pair myself. My brother needs a good pair of hunting binos and Im wondering if the Zen Ray ED2 is really that much better for the money than the Pentax. Ive heard many mixed reviews and some still swear the Pentax are hard to beat for the money compared to most anything out there. Are the Zens really that much better?

For $350 you could get the Theron Wapiti APO-ED.  I just got a pair(10x) and am very impressed so far.  I know they compare very favorably to the ZenRays according to the reviews I've read on this site.  However, I don't know how the Pentax stack up against the ZenRays, in fact I've never looked through either of them(though I've heard many good things about the Zens, also the Therons I mentioned earlier).  Good luck with whatever you choose, hopefully they will serve you well.

I like Pentax SPs, but the Zens have much better CA control and a much, much wider FOV.  The Therons are very similar to the SPs, with a bit better CA control and a noticeably wider FOV.  The SPs have a sharp edge, but so do the Therons, and the Zens' edge is better than most people give it credit for, IMO.

Personally, I would take the Zens first, then the Therons, then the Pentax, but FOV is important to me.  $325 shipped is an excellent price for a new or like-new Pentax SP, and if the narrow FOV doesn't bother you, it is still a nice glass.

My favorite SP is the 8X32, and I think I will add one to my bino-quiver at some point.
