It is really sad to say, but it looks like Pecar-Berlin has gone out of business. I saw the news on nitro-express.com . These were some really well made and top quality scopes. If any of you out there have one, you know what I'm talking about. The company was adamant about keeping to old values of German craftsmanship. I guess in the end, low cost producers with o.k. quality are going to come out ahead.
If any of you find some in excellent condition at the right price, I strongly recommend latching on to it while you can.

Yep, I read that myself a while back on the internet somewhere. Totalfield's website in the UK still has some NEW ones I guess, they're still on their site. I see Pecars regularly on e-bay going for a couple of hundred or more. I always had Pecar Scopes as one of my favorite searches on e-bay...but they always were commanding more money than I wanted to spend. You never know, however, sometimes things just get neglected on e-bay, and one can scarf up something dirt cheap sometime! How is the Seeadler business? --Ed

Docter is still in the U.S. They are now imported by MERKEL U.S.A. out of Trussville, Al. They also go by the name JENA ANALYTIK. I posted earlier that I would have loved to have gotten in on that deal.(importing them) To Ed : Seeadler -Optik is doing quite well for me although I aim to grow the business considerably. They are popular in Europe and compare with Docter, Meopta, and IOR. As business grows, we will eventually start advertising in publications. I think that's one of the driving forces - people, especially the younger generation, like to see glossy pics in magazines, and ads on the outdoor channel. I am just a Papermill mechanic with limited funds who happened to stumble on this business by chance. Thanks for asking. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, Lisenfeld, another small German company, has also closed the doors. I don't know much about this company, but hate to see any of them close the doors.

Yes, I have seen some of their scopes ( Lisenfeld) for sale, but could never find out anything more about them....I guess that was the reason. I, too, hate to see little, interesting optics companies disappear.
I understand that Hertel & Ruess was bought up by Gerhardt in 1995 when they bought Nickel....so at least the bloodline is still there. I always wondered where they went.
Thanks, HuntMaster... --Ed

Yes, Hertal and Reuss was absorbed by Nickel, which is now Gerhardt Nickel. It is a shame too. I once tried to do business with them (Nickel), but the owner was a real pecker-head. He was not interested in the U.S. market one bit, and thought I was just a dumb F%$#. Now, a small company like Seeadler is reaping the benefits of our market, and Nickel sells straight out of the factory to anyone at inflated prices.

Most of the older Pecar's were steel tube. They still made some steel tubes right up until they closed, but most of the newer were aluminum. Scopes made somewhere around the last 12 years that I know of were serial numbered. Hope this helps.
Derek
P.S. as I stated earlier, if you find one with an exceptional price, I wouldn't hesitate to jump on it. The only thing I ever saw wrong with one was the coatings went "milky". This was on a 30-35 year old scope. Most scope repair companies could fix that, although I admit, I don't know what the cost would be. Seeadler can do this, so while I'm thinking about it, I will email them and get a rough estimate. Edited by HuntMaster - February/27/2008 at 17:34 |
