Hello all! My 1st post is to ask for your help. I have a Pecar Berlin 6x56 scope that i know nothing about. i really want to know what it might be worth but any info you folks can provide would be great! It has no serial number and the only thing wrong with it is that it is missing a little paint from where the mounts were on it. the glass is crystal clear and the adjustment work fine.

Pecars used to have a good reputation in Australia and Britain. The one I had 40 years ago was a 3-7x36 with the usual reticle-movement, which was hard to mount but gave better blending of fields and field of view than image-movement scopes (of the time at least). The body was 1" steel but many sold here were 26mm. Reticle designs were able to be interchanged by the owner but I would not have wanted to risk damp air getting in while doing that.
The fixed-power scopes were usually denominated as power x relative luminosity (expressed as the square of the exit pupil), whereby the 4x36 was labelled 4x81. The exit pupil size is calculated by dividing the objective diameter (in mm) by the nominal power. The 6x59 would probably have had an objective lens diameter of about 46mm.
In later years they also produced image-movement models called 'Champion' and some at least were labelled with their objective sizes, which seemed to claim slightly narrower diameters, eg: 4x35. Your 6x56 may be a late model, possibly image-moving, with a very large objective. They used to have 25-year warranties but I bought mine second-hand and it had parallax seemingly beyond the ability of local repairers to fix. I made a leather cheekpiece for the rifle and had no more trouble. I believe the Berlin factory closed about four years ago and am uncertain whether they continued after that. The only web references I can find are for s/h scopes, so it may be Pecar has now 'gone for a burton'. |

Pecar Berlins were/are very nice premium scopes. I have 3, and although they are no longer in business, I would not hesitate to get another. I see them on the web from time to time going in the $600 range
The last owner of the company was Michael Schwartz. The reason for closing the doors was very elementary in my opinion. They had a very nice line of products in the final days.
Enjoy your scope, take good care of it, it will last a lifetime.
