I am thinking of getting a .223 and I am wondering if the BSA contender scopes will hold up to the recoil if not which scope will for around $150

Better to save your money and get good glass than to buy something that is worth ZERO after you buy it and are unhappy with it.  Most guys I know and shoot way better than I do at the moment, put as much money into their glass as they do into their rifles!!  Some more than that.  So if a rifle costs $490-600, figure on the same amount for the scope!!  I put at least that much into the glass, because I know how badly, cheaper scopes perform!!

I learned by shooting groundhogs in PA.  The last year that I did I shot 80, with the closest being 258 and the furthest being 549 with a .22-250 by Ruger M77, Mark II.   If you want to take these sorts of shots, get the better quality scope, nothing else satisfies like the body shots you hear when you hit where you are aiming!  Also, these scopes actually hold their value, should you ever decide to trade up and get something different!!!!   You ever wonder why you never see any Simmons, Barska, Bushnell, or Tasco scopes ( except the SS 10X), on the Sample List.  It is because they aren't worth anythng to anyone!!!

Hope you make the right choice!

Take a look at a mueller optics.  I just received my 4-16 X 50 AO tactical illuminated mil-dot for $220

last week and the optics were great.  Nice clear and bright!

Good Luck

I have been using a bushnell elite 3200 fixed 10 power for over a year now and it has been flawless. I've been using it on a single shot 223 out to 400 yards on prairie dogs. Also this scope is pretty close to your price range. If you don't mind a fixed power.
