Are there any Outdoor Life subscribers here?  I just looked through their recent Optics Test and before I go into my take on it, I would love to hear other people's opinions.

Interesting read.  No t knowing much about Meopta, I was surprised with how high they had the MeoPro ranked for optical quality (4th), and how low they had the Minox ZA5 ranked for optical quality (16th).  Also surprised that the Zeiss Victory Diavari rated 5th in optical quality, though its' image rating was A+.  Now if only I could afford that Swaro Z5!

Could you offer your opinion of the MeoPro, and as compared to a similar Zeiss Conquest and especially a Kahles Helia CL 3-9x42.  The Kahles has me pretty interested @ $600 for a new hunting scope.

I read it last night Ilya...... Quite intertaining to see the results.   Big difference in an unbias (no Bribe) test result and what they did.

I'll take your opinion over anyones!

I'll bet the boys at MINOX are not to happy with O/L....!  Not a lot of good reviews on the riflescopes or binoculars... Just maybe they didn't advertise enough with them!  <wink>

I've always enjoyed Bill McRae's work.  Seems to me he's been around long enough to offer an unbiased opinion.  Of course he was only one of the those involved.

Is the full article online anywheres?

Leupold VX-3 got an A+ for optical quality, that is funny!

I'll need to read the article now, look into their methods.  A Zeiss Diavari 6-24X having equal image quality to a Leupold VX - yea, maybe if the Zeiss were on 24X and the Leupold were on 3X, maybe then. Maybe.

I agree with you about the reviewers who thought a Leupold (any Leupold) equivalent to a Diavari in "Image". That's one of the subjective categories.

I wish they did blind optical testing (LOL)--by which I mean, don't let them know which scope they are using or which set of scopes they are even testing. Cover it up except for the lenses.

Their category descriptions are _very_ confusing.

The "Optical Quality" ranking is an "objective" number based on regular and low light testing with an Air Force resolution target and based on mechanical tests (repeatability and accuracy of adjustments).

The "Image" ranking is based on what the reviewers thought of the image through the scope and is subjective, which is why it sometimes doesn't match the "Optical Quality" ranking.

The "Design" ranking is in my opinion also subjective and is whether or not the reviewers like the feature set for the scope.

Price/Value is also subjective.

I wish they'd break out the three components of the "Optical Quality" rating.

If it was a double blind test, then it would be completely subjective.  Then and only then will I take someone's word for it.  I like to look thru them with my own eyes.

To me the Minox Za5 is pretty close to the Conquest series in clarity/contrast.  So far, it has held up on the range as well.  Tracks good and has firm clicks on the adjustments.  I do wish the magnification ring was a little 'easier', but overall.  I am impressed.

+1 skywalker.Iwould also like to add that owning both Conquest & Minox that the magnification eyebox on my Za5 4-20x50 is much greater.

Reviews like this always crack me up.  Im a motorcycle junkie also and those magazines are the same.  Marketing Budget directly reflects when the yearly "review" comes around.  Way to many subjective things are evaluated in my opinion.

Value, Quality, Clarity, etc etc etc

I would rather see a review of features that are NOT subjective

Holding Zero
Submerged Test
Extreme Temp Test
Adjustment Accuracy (Box)
Illum range reflection
reticle options
FFP and SPF tested independantly

When you get into the above 2k optics most of the above mentioned tests are a moot point and it becomes a features battle.  The sub 2k and sub 1k battles compared in test that aren't subjective is what I wanna see.  All the Weaver/Simmons/BSA/Millet type (living on their name and now chinese crap) would get destroyed.  This is all my personal opinion of course.  Its kind of like trying to tell people that the AR weapon system isn't legos ... they all like to learn the hard way.

Kinda hard to get any meaningfull information when you are comparing apples, oranges, grapes, and lemons. I would like to take a closer look at the Weaver Super Slam though.

Double talk. The rag must be run by democrats. The one that pays the most money gets the job. No matter how incompetent they are. Corporate handouts welcome.

It would better serve the magazine sales, and its reputation to tell the truth once in a while. IMO

I grew up using Leupold, was the only thing my father would use.  A while back I picked up a Leupold VX-7 LR with Varmit reticle for a Varmit rig.  The glass wasn't any better than a Falcon Menace, Its Eye Relief was so/so and it wasn't "Made in the USA" anymore.

This is my opinion of Leupold currently, They are joining the ranks of once great optics makers now selling their Name with cheap Asian parts and quality is modest.  Simmons, Redfield, BSA, Millet, etc.  I now trust in US Optics Big Smile

At least they put Vortex and Alpen on the list.Meopro is a nice scope which got good mention.I wonder how that list would appear if some of the forum members were doing the Test. And the winner is L%$*&#@!!!

Most of the issues with Leupold is from VX-III before they brought out the VX-3 last year. Leupold finally upgraded the quality of there glass. Problem is they waited so long before doing it they lost a lot of their following and acquired a unfavorable reputation. They were not the best for several years. It hurt them. Only time will tell if they are willing to learn second best is not the best only competitive.

Objective test results should usually be presented separately from subjective opinions.  When the two are intermixed, the results are less useful for obvious reasons.  Your tastes and needs may differ considerably from mine.

You will notice that Burris is not included in this test, and has been missing for a number of years.  I don't blame them.  They received some scathingly unfair reviews in prior years based primarily on subjective opinions.
