I was searching Blingo on the web and typed in binoculars.  I found a very good site called Laura's optics review at binoculars.org.  She referenced the Cornell lab of ornithology which had some very good reviews on birding binoculars and a great rating system.  Just FYI.  I think these sites and their rating system could be helpful to anyone in the market.

Good hunting,  TJ

Baylian,

The Cornell lab's reviews have come under a lot of criticism from birders (who tend to be true optics fanatics.)  These criticisms range from concerns over their testing procedures (for example, comparing binoculars while looking through common glass windows) to charges that there were clear indications of brand preference unrelated to optical properties that were allowed too much weight in the overall ratings.

To be sure, the Cornell report is a decent read and you can probably glean some useful information from their work but, just take it all with a grain of salt and know that birders do not hold it in much regard.

I wouldn't be looking for any optical perils of wisdom at the 24hourcampfire. Very limited optics knowledge there. Good source for other knowledge though. You will gain much more knowledge from the folks here. Just my observation.

Roy,

I occasionally "stick my head in" over at 24hourcampfire. I registered as a user about 6 months or so ago though, I don't think I've ever actually posted anything. The discussions there generally just don't catch my interest as much. I assume you're "RDFinn?"  Seems like you're taking Eremicus (or "E") to task a bit.

I don't start things, just finish them. I tried to share some of my observations and knowledge with that individual. When became flip with me on several occasions, I gave em lead. I am just a small cog in his fan club. He deserves everything he gets. I can only imagine how his "eye box Leupold " BS would be met here.

I think you would be amused at the rantings of the gentlemen named Eremicus. Never has so little been said with so many words.
