I'm looking into the possibility of making a mobile app for The O.T.  It will be extremely pricey to build, so my question to you is:

Would it benefit you to be able to access The O.T. in a user friendly platform from your smart phone?

I don't think so, I'd save the money for something else. The OT can be easily accessed through the browser of one's phone; save the site as a "my favorite(s)" and set up email updates, etc. Not sure what else an Application (like iTunes Apps) would do?

Maybe an RSS feed of some sort would be an option for specials, etc. for SWFA?  People can subscribe to the RSS feed (OT and/or SWFA).

It works fine now for me, I only loose the ability to use the Emoticons. No big deal for me.

Wow Chris.  I don't have text messaging, but do check in here to look most everyday.

Call me old fashioned, but for me I like your website improvements, and it seems you
are doing things good enough for me.

I use a Palm Treo, and access it on my mobile web already. I would assume anyone else using a smart phone could do the same.  I wouldn't invest the money. If you just have too much money, and need somewhere for it to go, I know this guy...............Bucky

I don't access anything on my phone but calling, and texting.
So I vote to use the money for something else.

I agree witrh the rest, save your money for better things like a SWFA sponsored hunt or something!  The technogeeks out there and here already have access so it doesn't make sense for you to pay to develop something!

Chris, it is a princely offer, but most of us, I think, are not that hogtied into the phone bells and whistles.  I use what I HAVE to and avoid as much as I can.  Besides, my netbook will run rings around those fancy phone/iPhone apps...  I have 3 of the best ballistics programs around at my fingertips and can access all three simultaneously with or without internet.

I gave up using a smartphone a couple of years ago, although I might get another one soon.  They seem to be getting better.  I had to use one when I was in business school, but most applications were buggy as hell and screens were not good enough.

Now, there are a couple that look useable.

With that in mind, I suspect that a special application for smartphones is probably unnecessary.  However, if people with smartphones have a hard time navigating the website on a small screen, perhaps it is worth while to make sure the website structure is "small screen/low bandwidth friendly".

Maybe make a bare-bones version of the GUI available? or something along those lines.

ILya

I use my Blackberry Storm for web surfing a lot. Sites that have mobile apps are a big bonus.
I come to O.T. often on the Storm. The site is fast enough for reading posts. Starting, replying and editing are a bit more challenging. I don't know if the cost is worth it to you, but I can do without a mobile app here. If you do go with one I would also be quite happy.

O.T. Mobile is a "nice to have".  I also don't believe it is necessary and it may not give you a good ROI, if any.  O.T. via Blackberry, iPhone & Android browsers works just fine, and that covers most of the smartphone market.  As others have already suggested, invest the capital elsewhere.

I don't really see there being a definite need Chris. Especially considering the cost. There is that tax write off though. Which would offset a little of the cost. The question remains, is it justifiable in returns?
