ordered the Steiner p4xi yesterday. I am hoping the 4x16 is enough for shooting a 600 yd range. Still a little confused about how much optics you need for the distances you shoot. I'm new to the longer range shooting. Any opinions on this?

Depends on what your intended use is.... hitting steel plates at 600 is achievable with iron sites.... but magnification makes it easier. I've used a 3-9 a whole heap of a lot on steel plates at that distance and never felt lacking for that purpose. If I where shooting F-Class matches for groups I'd choose as much magnification as I could and dial it up until mirage hindered me.... but different disciplines. 4-16 is a pretty universal and useful range. Will there be times that 16 could leave you wishing you had a bit more, sure, but alternatively there would be times that you still have to turn it down to fight mirage from 16x I bet..... You're new to this so I would recommend getting plenty of trigger time in and practice practice practice..... once you have a better foundation you'll know more about how you want you next optic range to be in but the 4-16 you purchased should accommodate more than adequately until you upgrade. |

I wouldn't want the 6X bottom end myself. I find the 4-16 a better fit for me than the 6-24.
I don't own any scopes in the configuration anymore. Never found I liked not being able to go below 6X. Only have 1 scope that is a 5-20 but its on a gun that will never see use as anything other than long range target shooting (300yds minimum). |

A 4-16X Steiner is an excellent choice unless your shooting flies at 600yds., and then it's probably doable. You've got excellent glass in a very usable magnification range with that Steiner. I've got an older 6.5-20X50 Leupold VX-III and a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14X50, and I'll take the Zeiss over that Leupold any day, and that's for shooting at 600yds. Glass quality trumps magnification and you'll be much happier with the Steiner over the higher mag. Vortex PST.

I have a Predator Extreme 4-16 x 50 Steiner and you'll be fine for 600 yards. If anything, your glass may be better.
I find that with my scopes that go up to 20-24X, I am usually using them at 16x.

First: what caliber are you shooting? Second: What rifle? For 600yds I really don't you'll need a 20 MOA rail.

I'm probably going to get flamed for saying this but Vortex seems to get a lot of hype that the performance doesn't deliver on...

You shouldn't need a 20MOA rail with that setup unless your planning on going way past a 1,000yds, but 600 yds, should be easy.

Scrum, Vortex is one of few that offer optics covering most of the range, from the inexpensive to the not inexpensive.
You could very well be talking about their department state-level stuff, while many here are talking about their top level optics which do, in many cases, compete quite well with what are considered the alpha class optics.

The problem Vortex has as a brand is that in their attempt to try to cover all niches, they have diluted their brand reputation IMO. Their upper tier optics are very nice. Some of their mid level stuff is decent for the price. The problem is they also put their name on a lot of fairly low end stuff, and that forms much of the buying public’s perception of Vortex. I don’t care for the majority of their riflescopes myself, but everything they offer I’ve used that carries the “Razor” title has been very good.
Vortex is like many other optics brands in that they don’t manufacture their products (* mostly); they design them and contract manufacturing out to various optics facilities throughout Asia. Quality level is thus dependent on specifications requested, which is reflected in the price point. * If I’m not mistaken, the Razor HD AMG is the exception to the above statement. I believe Vortex is manufacturing it at their facility in Wisconsin. |

I agree. I have several of their upper level optics and only one of the lower level. The stuff at the top is good, the stuff at the bottom fits where they priced it.
