Has anyone used the Beretta, Optilok scope mounts?  They're apparently designed for Sako/Tikka rifles.  If so, how do you rate them and what features commend them, if any?

If I recall, Mark ( AKA cheaptrick) had a set that did not work out for him. Might want to fire off a P.M. for details.....

I've used them a couple of times.  I have mixed feelings about the OptiLocks overall.  I like the fact they have the ring inserts to self align with the scope tube, improve grip on the tube and prevent ring marks.  I don't like the fact that they are so freakin' high!  Even their "low" rings are the height of some ring mfg's "high" rings!  I have a set of Low OL's on my Sako 75 Varmint with a 50mm objective scope, if that tells you anything!  I don't particularly care for the fact they use separate bases, since the Sako receiver already has base grooves built in.  They make a 1 piece ring mount version that I do think is a good idea, and they look like nice rings, but I never see these available anywhere, and the last time I called Beretta about them, they told me at the time that they weren't available in the States.

If it were me, unless you can get the OL "Ring Mounts," I would avoid the 2 piece versions and instead get either Talleys or the Leupold Ring Mounts.  Here's a pic of my Sako 75 with the Talley rings:

It seems I remember Mark saying the screw heads stripped easily.  It seems that the screw heads are rather soft for whatever reason.

So do they have the sort of self-aligning plastic inserts that Burris uses in the Signature Ring Series?

Yes, exactly the same.  That is one positive thing they have going for them.  That and the finish on these rings perfectly match the finish of Sako rifles.  Otherwise, I just don't care for the Optiloks that use separate bases and rings.  It usually means the mounts are way higher than they need to be, since the bases are very thick.  I also don't particularly care for the way the bases clamp onto the Sako receiver groove, with just a screw and a small tab on one side of the bases.

Here are the Optilocks on my Sako 75 Varmint in .204 Ruger.  That is an IOR 4-14X50 with LOW OL's!...

I got hold of Cheaptrick.  He confirmed that the screw head stripped, and they are kind of spendy.  He went through several before he went another direction.  I'm going to need new rings, because the stock Tikkas I have don't allow sufficient clearance for a 52mm objective.   The bell itself is expected to be around 59mm.  Mark suggested Talleys by wasn't sure they would fit my rifle.  However, the Talley site lists them.

I've got a SS rifle, but the scope is black and I think I'll go with black rings.  Talley has light weight rings for this rifle which are alloy and powder coated black, which sounds pretty good.  I haven't verified it, but expect the size of the objective to require medium height.    I think I saw something suggesting that the medium Talleys will take up to a 63mm bell.   Thanks for the input.

I stripped 3 of the damn screws right off the get go. Seems like they were Allen head screws and not torx head. Roll%20Eyes

For what its worth, JB of Accuflight told me last year, that Sako supposively addressed this issue on the soft allen screws. I haven't had any problems with mine.
