I guess what surprised me most was the fact that of the scopes listed that I have, and have compared, the rating system was dead on. You would need to include resolution as well as brightness, and tracking-weight-and flare out would be some good criteria to consider also. Excellant post and info.

i own or have used zeiss, swarovski, kahles, simmons(atec), leopold, nikon, pentax, schmidt&bender, and bushnell. by far the best glass is swarovski but their recticles in low light stink (way too thin). my favorite is my illuminated kahles 3-12x56. for what it is worth i would probably buy an illuminated swarovski if i wanted the best of the best that would last a life time and therefore be a good buy at $2000

Have had this thought for awhile now. As far as ratings go, the glass is broad
enough in quality that there is something out there for everyones budget. You
really cant go wrong. What I look for the most is a "recoil rating". The 4200s
have their rating, the Super Sniper has its 50 bmg rating and IOR states that it is "recoil proof".
Saying that a scope is "shockproof" I dont believe pertains to a recoil rating.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, is it the money you spend or how many brands
out there are "magnum proof".?

I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Jim. I'm a retired gunsmith (10+ years and a degree).
I've shot ALL the glass. ALL OF IT. You'd be surprised that when you go to the range and a shooter finds out you are a gunsmith they ALWAYS have a question that generally starts with "Well, to REALLY understand my issue with my scope, you are going to have to fire it once or twice." Now WHO can refuse that?
Funny part is, I like the 'old' stuff. The best glass I've ever owned was my Unertl. Mounted on my .308 Howa with a #7 Shilen barrel. I built that rifle myself and man, that was a sweet setup. Here's a pix of two of my rifles from school. The front one is my 308 Howa with the Shilen barrel and the Unertl scope. The rear rifle is a Norinco M14 with a no-name scope for testing purposes (long story).
The second pix is of my Chinese NHM91 with a PSO 4x24v, setup SPECIFICALLY for 7.62x39. I know, I know, I'm gonna refinish the furniture so it matches front to rear. The rear piece is of much newer manufacture. So I'll strip both down. I MIGHT bleach them. Then hand rub in about 15 - 20 layers of a matte finish. Should show and shoot nicely. I might do a little 'tuning' on the AK receiver if I don't like the results. But this weapon was specifically purchased as a 100 - 200 yard (M?) "Minute of Man" type weapon. And 200 yards would be pushing it FOR ME. My vision ain't what it used to be. Mainly for use in what most would consider an 'urban' environment. I just like to punch holes in paper with it right now.

Brands listed two times kinda fall in between and or offer a diversity of products whos average spans two number ranges.

Hi all, I am very new to the forum and have been reading a lot of the posts and learning a bunch. I see that the scale is used primarily for hunting scopes, using the same scale how would you guys rank the tacticle scopes. i.e. Mark 4's, the Super Sniper, and the new X.O.T.I.C.

Chris -
I realize that this thread has been going on for a while, but previously you indicated you thought the Kahles CL would be a 9.5 or 10 after you had a chance to use it for a while? Just curious as to what you feel is keeping it in the 7-8 range.

I still have the Kahles mounted on my #1 rifle and can't say enough good things about how it has performed, I neglected to revisit this thread and update it's status. I am working on a new T-Bone right now and will post it soon. Once it is up we can discuss it and tweak it as needed.
I am trying to keep from listing every single brand from every single manufacturer as it dilutes the simplicity of the scale, so only MAJOR brands that are worthy of having several of their models listed will be done that way.
Also a lot has changed since the first one was done.
