My sight has been degrading w/ age & I've decided to scope my rifles but I'm fairly new to optics. These are used as paper punchers right now but I want to have them for a SHTF scenario if needed so I'd like to hear your opinions on some possible setups.
I recently bought a Nitrex TR1 1.5-5x w/ Warne medium height QD rings for my FAL & a Vortex Viper 2-7x w/ high QD rings for my G3 clone. I have a Pentax Gameseeker 3-9x that I was going to mount on my M1A but now I'm debating if I should trade it for another 2-7x or something similar instead. Would a 3-9x complement better what I already have for longer distances or would a 2-7x be better for a more realistic use for the M1A?
Thank you in advance.

I have the viper 2x7 on a .22 LR and a SS 3x9 on my AR. It all depends on how far you usually shoot. I too wear glasses and the 2x7 on my MP15-22 is great, but I usually only shoot that 50 - 100 yds. My AR I'll stretch out to 100 - 300 yds on a regular basis and the 3x9 does all I need it to do for those ranges. Then again, I'm not trying to shoot the nuts off a mosquito either!
I'd go with the 3x9 myself, but it all comes down to the type of shooting you do and at what distances. Much over 100 yds and I'm liking the 9 power for my eyes. Again dependent on the size of target.

Unfortunately I'm limited to a 100 yds range where I live but I'd like to also have this as a SHTF rifle if needed. I wanted to know what the most "useful" scope for an M1A1 would be.
Thanks.

Generally, for a SHTF scenario, you really do not need a whole lot of magnification.
The easiest way to go is probably to get two Viper 2-7x32 scopes and be done with it. It will take care of your plinking needs and just about everything else out there. These are good allround designs and they are quite affordable right now. Alternatively, you could put the Viper onto one of them and a 1-4x24 or similar low range variable scope onto the other. The cheapest decent scopes of this type are Leatherwood CMR 1-4x24 and Hawke Endurance 30 1-4x24 Alternative, for a very functional, but minimalist piece, try Weaver V3 1-3x20. ILya

Koshkin,
How does the Vortex Viper compares valuewise to the Leatherwood & Hawke that you mentioned? I assume that the Nitrex TR1 falls under the Vortex Viper in overall quality? ($50 difference) & I only ask because I haven't had the chance to mount or use either one of the scopes I bought yet.
I'm thinking that a 2-7x or similar would work better for a .308 than a 1-4x.
Thanks for the replies.

With any optic other than an Aimpoint you will have a serious cheek weld issue requiring a Karsten cheek piece or a stock change like a Sage stock or a Mc Millan. The beauty of using an Aimpoint Red Dot on the M1a is it does not matter where you head is if you can see the dot it is on the target -- not so with other brands. Also a dot can be mounted forward in a scout position using Springfield Armorys scout rail. Edited by Urimaginaryfrnd - April/14/2011 at 14:05 |

Urimaginaryfrnd, thanks much for all the red dot suggestions & links.
I already have a SA scout scope mount but I don't think that a red dot only will give me the "reach" that I'm looking for. I also have a SEI scope mount & I'm going to look into a cheek riser as since I'm planning to scope it.

Once you start down the path to magnified optics you either select a scout style scope like the Leupold 2.5x if you want to mount forward or if you are mounting over the action you can use virtually anything but the cheek rest will become a must have item there are some canvas ones that Springfield makes and most soldiers cut pieces of camp matress and use tape to make their own unless they are lucky enough to get a sage stock. One concern - the action on an M1a tears up most scopes so a fixed 6x or fixed 10x like the Super Sniper line will live longer. Vortex has a good warranty though.

I ended up trading the Pentax 3-9 for another Vortex 2-7. Thank you all for the great feedback.
