Long time lurker, first post. Recently I purchased a POF 308 I have been debating on optics for a few weeks now. Primary uses are hunting/target shooting with ranges not to exceed 500 yards.

I was looking at
SWFA 3x9SS
Vortex Viper 4x16 HS
Nikon M-308
Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14

About the pull the trigger on the 3X9 SS but I wanted to hear some opinions or other suggestions, given the ranges I will be shooting I did not think a high magnification scope is needed, price is not so much of a barrier as I just want something that is rock solid quality.

OF the list you put up the two that I would be looking at would be the SS 3-9 and the Zeiss,  The deciding factory would be if you wanted a true tactical scope or not.  The SS will have better turrets, and more adjustment, be FFP, and glass will be pretty close to equal.  I've had both and think that for your gun and application the SS would get my money all day long.

The 3x9 SS looks like a great scope and I don't know where you hunt but if you do any hunting in the wood line you may want to consider something with a little less mag. With less mag you actually gain a couple things 1. Speed of target acquisition 2. Field of view. The other thing to take into consideration is that the way magnification works is 3 power is equal to the target looking as though it's a 100 yards away when at 300 yards, 5 power is equal to the target looking as though it's a 100 yards away at 500 yards. If 500 yards is the farthest you plan on shooting a 5 power scope could be considered sufficient. That being said 6 power is commonly considered the highest power you would want to take a standing shot, at anything more tends to induce to much human error. I also own a POF so I understand wanting to go big and can understand if your hunting long distance how it would be nice to get a closer look at the Rack of what you think is a big dear. Just something to keep in mind. There are some different mag ranges you may want to also look at there a a few company’s now coming out with 1-6 such as ss,Bushnell and Leupold Higher end there are 1-8 and even 1-10 but you pay for it. Also you may want to look at the 2.5 to 10 such as Vortex PST and Trijicon there is a 2.5-16 by Bushnell and if you want to get crazy Bushnell has a 3.5- 21. Some food for thought hope that helps.

If I had your Rifle I would consider the Weaver 3-15 tactical or IOR 2-12. Weaver being more affordable. Because it's an AR fast target acquisition and reacquisition would be important to me because I would be able to take full advantage of all the attributes of the rifle being it's a semi-automatic.

For you application, I can second the recommendation for the SS 3-9x42.  It is a good fit for your application, especially with the Mil-Quad reticle.
