Dang, I misspelled my user name! Anyway I was hoping that some of you might be able to help me. I am waiting for my 6.5 Creedmoor (DPMS) and was wondering about scope choices. I want to use it for hunting here in Idaho. I may get into match shooting depending on the accuracy of the gun though. Here we have sage flats, brushy areas and thick timber. I planned on putting a red dot on top of the Burris PEPR mount that I have for close range. I have always used a 3-9 VX1 so I dont know much about some of these scopes. I kinda like the idea of a Mil dot for long range. At least 4-12 would be my preference. I dont know how much of a difference a FFP scope will make other than in the price. My hunting partner took an elk last year at 700 yrds with a regular duplex 3-9 on a 25-06, one shot! I am not that good at judging holdover though. You all seem very knowledgable and I would greatly appreciate your help in choosing a scope under $700.

Welcome to the O.T.,  Opinions are free and I'm sure you will receive quite a few here.  I'm thinking the Super Sniper 3x9 might be some thing of interest to you.

Please see this post.

I am a bit uncomfortable with your friends decision to attempt a shot at an elk at 700 yards with a 25-06. The bullet drop with a 250yd zero is (give or take) 96" and the remaining energy 700 ft/lbs. (110gr Accubond @ 3100fps).
Not even close to the 1000ft/lbs generally accepted to be the minimum for a deer.
Wind in field conditions at this range can be difficult to judge.
I would hope that you and your friend would consider stalking closer to game to take higher percentage shots, as an elk is one of our grandest trophies and wounding one and not recovering it should be avoided.
I have taken 25+ elk and although most drop nicely with a good hit, about 2 in 10 will astound you with their will to live, and having them get away when you know they're hit is a bitter pill to swallow.
Anyway, with that of my chest, welcome to OT, and enjoy your new AR.

i agree, you are lucky enough to down them with one shot @100 yds with the 25-06 ( unless you shoot them in the head or spine) usually they run away from anything you shoot them with. my 30-06 killed one under 100yds and it was dead on its feet but still managed to run 60 yds up hill.
