This is the first time in my life that I have not gone hunting on opening day But its rained here all week and most of the corn crop is still in the fields! Since I don't have a job and gas is @ $2.30 a gallon, thought it wise to wait and go under better circumstances! Next week should be better.
I know South Dakota opened last week, did anyone go? Iowa opens today as well, please share your hunts!

Finally got out today. Didn't start off very well and it got pretty warm. all in all, not a good day of bird hunting, but still better than not hunting. I got one and my younger son got one. We only saw 2 other roosters. Still a ton of corn in the fields, hope they get that out soon. Deer season opens the 15th!

Most of the reports in Kansas say its off to a slow start, too warm and windy since opening. The wind here has been around 25 to 30 knots and in the mid 70s .

Got out this morning with the Boys and our Choc lab, Nestle with a buddy and few more. Nestle did awesome today...... she pointed 2 Roosters and retrieved a cripple that would have surely gotten away! The first point was in some real heavy cover and the little cock bird didn't want to come out so in I went. Darn thing came out at an angle that didn't present a safe shot for my youngest Son, Ty and it got away. VERY proud of Ty for NOT taking the shot, he's learning!!! 2nd point was a classic, we entered a waterway into the wind and she locked up tighter than a rusty bolt and my oldest Son, Tucker almost walked right past her without noticing. I got his attention and showed what Nestle was doing and he went in for the flush. Bird busted out of the cover and banked to his left. Tuck's first shot was a little behind but his second found its mark and downed the brilliant colored bird. Nestle was on it faster than ants to a picnic. Delivered to the hand of Tyler (his dog). Damn near brought a tear to this old man's eye!
Last weekend, Ty went hunting with his Uncle and a Father & Son friend of ours. They got 5 and Nestle pointed and retrieved all of them. She is showing some potential and we're pretty excited about it!
Also, this past Tuesday, I sat in the pits of legendary waterfowler Ralph Kohler and got my first big Canada of the year!

Sounds like a great time, my father and I used to hunt with the dogs and I think we enjoyed watching the dogs work as much as anything about the hunt. Those were great days to spend with my dad. They are gone forever for me now so enjoy them as much as you can while you can.

I am! Tucker has really started getting into too, still not quite to the extent of Ty. I really enjoy both of them - they are so different!
