HI,

First time poster,I am going to buy a XCR M,which will be in 308.I think Robinson said it will have them around the start of the new year? Here is my question, which scope should I get for the purpose of self-defence,and if needed hunting.I am looking at ACOG as it would work at night with a light set-up.I have a aimpoint on my AR and like it,but would need some magnification I live in Alaska and if used for hunting, just deer, some times long shots may be needed. I am really looking for a scope in a situation of the "sh-t hitting the fan" kind of thing, what scopes would you suggest. Thanks

I would get a 3.5x ACOG.  Or maybe an IOR 1-4x or an IOR 1.5-8x.  Any of those would be a great scope.

the gas block is held by a set screw against a milled flat, in my case this screw came loose and the tube assemble floated forward a slight amt. (somewhere around 3000 rds) and caused the bolt to cam slightly off center, and notched the locking lug, this caused the bolt to lock open when the gun was held muzzle up. after taking it back to robinson the replaced the bolt and returned it in about a week. I suggested they look at this problem. who knows if they did. the 1.5x6 leo with turret bullet drop turret works, well, also look at the new NF 2.5x10 33 nxs with either covered turrets or exposed, this would be my choice in either the .223 or the .308.

ACOG, for your purposes, would be tough to beat.  It's always on, should be close to dead-on for your round, can be used at distance, and is OK up close.

EoTech is a good option too, small center dot good for distance work, larger circle good for up close, and it is fast on target.

A good variable is also a strong choice, great reticule selections, great variable ranges, great glass, great fit.

The real question is priority.  That "on" switch would make me tend to not a battery-powered reticule if the primary purpose is defense; however, if the primary purpose is hunting or shooting, the "on" switch is no big deal and the capacity to change powers is great.

I'll take a few picture too - for posterity!

Both scopes have great strengths: the AR is quick on target for close encounters and is small enough to not throw off the gun's balance or movements.  The Millett (which is about to be for sale - since I love the concept but don't love the optic) is good for close-up and for distances out to about 400 yards.

The downside of both is that they must be turned on, the upside is that I am no longer combat-ready and can probably afford the 1/2-second it takes to illuminate the reticule.

As an aside, anyone interested in a lightly used Millet DMS, I can make a deal, all original paperwork and packaging.  At the moment, I am torn between Nightforce  and USO - and maybe Ellis - MAYBE!

nice thing about low range variables with illuminated reticles is there use as or close to a 1x with heads up shooting with or without the reticle on,  acog is good to.

I like the scopes mentioned but if the senerio you propose is what if the * hits the fan and Im thinking you likely have something for up close and personal either a handgun or shotgun or some ability to point and shoot so I would want something to  take game at distance but with the potential to use at mid range so Im thinking one of the 3.5-10x40 s:

and if you are talking long term batteries wont be available.  If you are more concerned about up close and mid range I'm really thinking Dale has it going with that 1.5-5 it lays really nice on the rifle. The similar power Nightforce is probably the best and Ior quite good but price maby be a factor so the Leu should be adequate.
