New guy here and need a bit of help understanding some #'s. There is a pair of binos I saw and on the focus adjustment dial it had some #'s on them--8.5 X42 ( i understand what those # are) then below that it had 7,6*( with the * actually being a degree symbol , just don't have a degree symbol on my key pad). What are those #'s and what do they mean??

That is the field of view tranlated into degrees. One degree is 52.5 feet. So, 52.5 x 7.6 = 399 feet.

If you want to go metric, there is 17.5 meters per degree of view @ 1,000 meters.  In your example (I'm thinking Swarovski 8.5x42 EL's) the fov will be 133 m @ 1,000 m.
