I have a m41/B swedish mauser with an original sniper scope.  It is currently my favorite rifle, and I can shoot better with it than with any of my "modern" guns.

Anyway, it was quite expensive back when I got it, and they are going up even more these days.  Today at the range, I noticed what looks like a crack when looking through it.  At the very top of the sight picture, so it doesn't really affect my view of my targets.  I was wondering, though, if it might be affecting my POI a little.  The last two times at the range, I shot sub 1" groups at 100 yds.  Today I shot maybe 1.5" or more.

I shoot my own handloads, which are on the light side.  I don't want the crack to get worse, and I want to get it repaired.

I was wondering if there are any optics companies that can repair a crack, or replace the lens, or whatever, on a very old military surplus scope.  I believe the scope was made in 1941 and probably went through swedish arsenal refurbishing in the mid-1950s.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi

Can you see it from behind or reverse?

What do you see when you carefully look through the scope reverse?

Normally mostly optical faults are more visiable when scope is reverse than normal.

Cracks are very unusul, but lens separation is quite common.

Lens separation is two lenses cemented together where the cement have got destroyed.

Regards Technika

looking through the scope backwards, I can also see it.

Yes, I said "crack" in the OP, but I know it maybe isn't really a crack.  I does look like one though.

ok, when I look through the scope reverse, I see the post upside down, and the ugly, crooked "crack" or whatever, near the bottom.  Looking through the front normally, I see the "crack" near the top of the view.

If it doesn't affect my shooting, I can live with it.

edit:  when I saw it at the range today (looking against a clear sky), I first thought it was a thread or something on the lens.

Most likely it's then some dirt that is very close to ones of the focal planes.

Any opticalrepairman that works with telescopic sights can probably solve that problem for you.

But as it's an old scope and not have been overhauled for many years the optics will probably win a lot on a good overhaul as well.

Regards Technika
