Hi there

I have an old Ruger No.1 that I have yet to scope. The rifle has the scope blocks for the old Redfield 3200s, Unertl ect. The rifle will be mainly used for shooting paper and hunting Springbok at distances between 100m and 400m. I now need to decide whether I should keep it original and put a Redfield 3200 on it or drill new holes for new bases to fit a modern scope? The rifle has some collectors value, but I am going to shoot it.

I have never looked through one of those Refields and would like to know whether I will have a much better rig with a new scope compared to the 3200s? How user friendly are those Redfields and how is clarity compared to modern scopes.

Any info appreciated.

Thanks

Pieter

Well, first of all your Ruger should be 'scope base-ready' already on the receiver....you shouldn't need to do any drilling...

The Redfield 3200 were good scopes years ago but everybody has made improvements since then.

I would get bases for the receiver and go with a more modern scope.

The rifle has bases, but they are spaced for the old 3200s, Unertl ect type scopes. The rifle do have some collectors value and that is why I am considering topping it with a Redfield 3200. I have no idea how good they are? I was hoping that someone on the forum might have some experience with these Redfields and can tell me how usable they are? If they do not perform well I will have to look at drilling a 3rd set of holes for a modern scope.
