I bought a nice Remington 1903a3 that had been turned into a hunting rifle. It has an old Nickel Supra 4x81 scope on it with some sort of power adaptor. I can't find much in Nick
Stoebel's book on this particular model. All the models, he lists have alloy tubes. This has a steel tube. It was requires a mount with windage adjustment. I suspect that the original
ower was stationed in Germany during the occupation and may have picked up the scope there. Here are some links to pictures. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi Doc, welcome to the O.T.
Link to their site is : gerhardt-optik.de . They can be difficult to deal with, but it's worth a try. Next time your at a gunshow, look up some of the older guys who have a nice collection of German Trillings. Usually these guys have a little knowledge about these older German scopes.

I'll shoot Technika a PM on this thread. He's up to speed on most Euro optics and may be able to help you.
Welcome to Optics Talk, Doc.

Yeah, Technika has some knowledge on Nickel. I don't think he is a very big fan of them though.

Thanks for the kind words of welcome. I look forward to learning more about this scope. I'd really
like to get some scans from old catalogs showing this model, I suspect that the adaptor was also made by Nickel as well. |

I have two Nickel scopes. One is a 4x81 with a steel tube and claw mounts. It has a German #1 reticle. Similar to what you have. I can't tell you too much about them except I believe the company was started by ex-Zeiss employees after WWII. This was supposed to be an improved Zeiss design. Nickel and Hertel & Reuss were later absorbed by Gerhardt as Huntmaster said.
My other Nickel scope is an aluminum tubed 4-10x40 with a dot reticle. The dot is only visible at higher magnifications due to it being very fine and being in the first focal plane. I can't imagine why they would put such a reticle in a scpe like this. It also has a 27mm tube. I have never mounted this scope. I bought it out of the Shotgun News sight unseen about 30 years ago. It needs a windage adjustable mount with 27mm rings. I have been looking to see if I can find some Redfield rings or perhaps their inserts for 30mm rings they made for their TX-27 scopes.
Perhaps someone with more knowledge than I sbout these scopes will chime in.

I have a few Nickels, and have had som more. I am not impressed by the quality of the older scopes.
They are not espesially tight against moisture and problems and the optical standard is quite low.
(This is when I compare to other european makers of the same time and age, not when i compare to bushnell or redfield!)
How the new Gerhardt scopes it, i have no clue, as i never have used them.
