This is quite astonishing:

How can one person shoot 85 people in an hour or two?
Didn't anyone fight back?

Based on the limited details available, he was just walking around a small island shooting people.

This is absolutely insane.

1) they are "trained" that such things don't happen,
2) gun rules:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_Norway
3) they don't know, due to training, that "passivity" doen't keep you alive...

exactly what the socialists are trying to do here...

Firstly, it´s a tragedy and a waste of young lifes. The whole nation is in shock.

Secondly, what should they fought back with ?

Thirdly, this will probably have an impact on norwegian (already rigid) weapon-laws. The fact that the deed is committed by a mentally disturbed person usually doesn´t seem to matter. When it comes to "the cure",  the answer is (as always) more stringent laws.

Hopefully it will have an impact on Norway's overly lenient sentencing guidelines. I heard on the radio today that the maximum sentence he can get is 21 years and that he could serve as little as 14.

Yes, the maximum sentence is lame. (it´s the same in Sweden)

Don´t know if I understand your english correctly, but do you mean that the unarmed victims (trapped on an island) should have fought back ?

Gerry,

I think what he means is that, in general, the population in Norway has accepted as general policy that firearms are heavily restricted and not readily available to the public. However, I don't think it would have made much difference in this case what country the island was in. It's hard to imagine many people would bring firearms to a teenager summer camp here in the U.S. either. As you can see from this photo, Utøya was not a place that is even populated and was just isolated enough to make it easy for the killer to do what he did:

Seven years ago, I sat with my newborn son on my lap and a loaded Glock on the coffee table while 100+ police officers combed our neighborhood for an escaped murderer. I was glad to have it. But I don't pretend that someone couldn't walk into the crowded lunchroom at his school and kill 40-50 people before the cops or anybody else could get there. Sickos are sickos. You can mitigate that but some are going to get through no matter what. Thankfully, there aren't that many as a percentage of the world's population.

The unfortunate side effect is that this has really shown what someone can do with hi capacity magazines. It wont be long before that is addressed again since the media has educated the bad guys and the libertards.  It is hard to believe that nobody else on the island was armed in any  manner that would have prepared them to fight back.

Guns: DO NOT KILL PEOPLE.

People (LUNATICS): KILL PEOPLE.

Once you have limited or completely disarmed the public you have become servants/slaves to the ruling body. The Romans, after conquering a new area, would disarm and make sure the indigenous people could not arm themselves. This practice goes back thousands of years.

Our founding fathers saw this in their own land and put this as the 2nd most important right for all law abiding citizens!

I fear that Norway will now crack down very hard on gun ownership and yet that does not keep them out of the hands of the evil people out there, or anywhere. There are countries today that have complete ban on firearms or very stringent laws and still deal with gun realated violence.

This is a terrible tragedy. Prayers have been sent for those affected.
