i have a tikka t3 lite 308 and a vortex razor hd 5-20x50 and need suggestions on base and rings. i hope to be shooting out to 1200yds. the scope has 36 mills for total elevation so am i correct in assuming i will have approx 18 mills of adjustment? if so at 1200 yds i need approx all the elevation. any suggestion on a base and rings for this application

Sounds like you need a tapered picatinny rail base.  Not sure how many MOA it will need to be as your type of shooting is not my thing.  You might search for that though.

I have that same gun! Actually, I have 3 of them.  Here are my suggestions:

1.  Get good at 100-500 yards first.  At 1200 yards, LOTS of thigns can go bad. Lots.  And most 308 loads are petering out before 1200 (depending on bullet and evironmental factors.

2.  My longer range T3 wears an EGW 20 MOA base.  I bought it here at SWFA:

You can find more expensivebases, but this one works as needed.

3.  On rings, I like Seekins or Badger, always had great results with both.  There are much cheaper options, but saving pennies on a gun you expect to shoot 1000+ yards is a very bad idea.

4.  Tikka actions are butter-smooth and their rifles are very accurate, you will enjoy this gun!

5.  The stock is one small notch above "sucks", but there are now many options if you wish to upgrade later.  My longer range T3 wears a Whiskey 3 chassis and it makes the gun handle much, much better. (I am 6"5', 210, stocks usually need some adjusting to fit me.)

6.  My Tikkas have liked most ammo I have fed them, but have LOVED Hornady amax bullets, hand loads and off-the-shelf.

Good luck and let us know how she shoots.

thank you guys. i have shot this gun from 100 out to 880yds with some success using a redfield 4-12 scope. ordered an egw hd 20 moa base and vortex medium height rings. ihope i have done the math correctly fitting the scope to gun. the objective measures 2.33" and the base measues .350", the rings are 1" from base to center of tube. the barrel tapers a bit so if my math is correct?? it should fit. if anybody can help me with this i would appreciate it. and yes the action is butter smooth and seems to be very accurate. the stock does suck, but it shoots straight and spent money on scope so stock will have to wait. ive been shooting fed prem gold metal 168s and 175s hpbt, seems to like them. does anyone have suggestions for better round for eventually stretchin out to further distance? sure appreciate any info as i am new to this addictive long range thing! thanks

Can you hand load?

If not, 175 is about as good as it gets.

Environmental conditions will dictate max effective range, but you are getting close at 900 yards - unless you are at high altitude or shooting in very warm, low humidity conditions.

not hand loading yet but trying to pickup some info on that. most of my longer shots have been at temps around 30 and my alt is bout 1150. ive been told that the humidity has very little effect but have been watching baro pressure closely, writing down all conditions when shooting. any suggestions on reloading presses and related equipt would be welcome.
