Over the last few years I ve lost interest in Leupold scopes due to price and mediocre press. One of the alternatives has been the nikon brand and Ive gotten a couple of the Monarch 2-7 scopes based on their apparent good or better low light perfomance. I think my Meopta is better, but its too big and heavy for a hunting gun. My impression has been that I get better resolution over a 3.5-10 Conquest, this based on only 1 exposure to hte conquest---.30 bullet holes in 100 and 200 yd targets. Could see them as well or better with 7X nikon than 10X zeis. My old 20yr or so Leupold 3.5-10 vx111 is not too bad also. "Looking through a piece of pipe" is also kinda wierd, but overall I feel the scopes are pretty good. Am I deluded?

Of course you are deluded but it's a mild delusion so take two asprin get plenty of rest and continue shooting.

Nikon has good glass so does Leupold VXIII and Koshkin will tell us who has better glass thant they do momentarily.

Due to popular demand :

Meopta Meostar and Conquest have about same glass quality.  I would perhaps give a slight edge to some Meopta models, but they are pretty close.

Monarch, VX-III and Sightron S2 (since ANthony brought it up) are pretty close as well, but a step below Conquest and Meopta.

Hello Rogin

The Conquest is the lighter scope but I would prefer to go with the Meostar.

I prefer 1" tubes, thus the Conquest.  But, I am impressed with the Meostar.

The Monarch is a good scope optically.

I would rate it just a little less than a Conquest, optically speaking.

IMO, you never "waste" money buying Nikon Monarch.

Your good to go!!!

Now, go shoot something!!

I feel better coddled now. One of the 2-7 is leaving for northern Colorado this week to see if it can see an elk, and the other 2-7 lives on one of the newfangled no smoke Savage front loaders and seems to like it. Our local gunshop deals in Meopta and I like the low powwer scopes but they are really heavy. I still may try one at a later date.

I would say the Nikon is a step below the Conquest but definitly not a waste of money.  The Monarch is a great scope and with some of the deals I have found them at one heck of a buy.

Never looked through a Meopta scope, however, their binos seemed pretty nice.

Happy shooting

AC

why the need for a lighter scope?

i have always been a fan of a heavier weapon - they kick like a baby - are easier to hold still (for me)

and if your gun fails, it's a heavier implement to whack something with. God forbid, THAT happen. hehe.

the meostar scopes are great.  the 3x12x50 is priced right @ around 670 or so, and holds it's own to swaro's.

beats the conquest, hands down.

good luck.

J

cheaptrick - i am a gamecock and spurriurs got yall's number this week!!!

i hope, anyway - eheheh.

should be a good game.

I can't start to tell you just how bad I want to "mill" Florida's field goal kicker with my Super Sniper......

That guy has missed more chip shot field goals this year than I can believe...........KILLING ME!!!

Great game. Spurrier is a genius and great coach.

i agree - there is a HUGE controversy between him and the ref's though - everyone is noticing the unfair calls.

oh, and back to the rifle scopes:

what 'meopta' did you have that was heavy?  they do make steel and aluminum varieties.

i HIGHLY recommend the meostar line

J
