Monarch is superior to the VXII.

A closer comparison would be the VXIII and the Monarch. That debate is up for grabs.

The Monarch 3-9x40 wouldn't be a bad choice.  I find that 9x is plenty for the "long range" shooting I do.  Anything over 300 yards is long for me so it depends on your definition of "long range."

Not over 500 yards what do you think about the 4-12x40 to much?

Nikon is crap... The sales people at largest gun dealer in W Pa will tell you the same thing... I was once considering the same scope.. They said " I would rather not sell you one" Nearly everyone they sold came back... Stick with leupold, Zeiss, Burris, I have and never had a broblem with any of them.. Sightron is not too bad.. Great warranty!!

Let's see...I have Leupold VariX III, Burris Signature, Nikon Monarch, Swarovski, Redfield Illuminator (Colorado), Kahles & Weaver GS.  I've never had a problem with any of them either, so from a reliability standpoint the Monarch is no more or less "crap" than any of the others.

I wouldn't think so as long as 4x on the bottom end works for you wherever you may be hunting deer.  It may not be optimum if you're in the thick woods.

Savageshooter.. You are on the right track with the power and objective size for your scope... I think you could do better for quality with the same or a bit more money.

P.S. Look at www.samplelist.com for Nikon scopes. 71refurbs.. Zeiss has a few too...  Wonder where they come from...

Between the Nikon Monarch and the Leupold VXII I would definitly go Monarch.  Better optics in my opinion.

I am not Nikon's biggest fan as I tend to prefer Burris and Sightron, but I do agree that Nikon makes a quality product for a good price.  Nikon Monarch is certainly better than the VX-II.

Most of the samplelist products will be trade ins or factory demo's/refurbished. A lot of the factory refurbished scopes just have cosmetic imperfections. Manufactures can't sell them as new so we buy them up and discount them. There's money to be saved if your not a perfectionist.

If you're talking about Nikon they will just have a 90 day warranty.

For a $400 budget, I'd go with an SS.

Hi; I just ordered a Nikon Monarch 3.3-10x44mm with adjustable objective for one of my hunting rifles. The lowest power setting is great for field of view and the highest power setting is considered by the Longrange Hunting guys as plenty of power for deer size targets out to 600 yards. The one I ordered has Mil dot reticle. This is a better scope than the Leupold VX-II. The Leupold VX-II in their 3-9x40mm does not have adjustable objective, and the actual magnification is 3.3 to 8.6 power.

I originally thought the Monarch was over your $400 budget. I thought they were in the $500 range.

"After review", it seems that the 4-12x40mm is right at your budget, so I retract my statement. That's a good power setting I think too.

Get the Monarch for hunting.

It will give you good performance, and being a variable it will give you more options than a fixed.

Best of luck!!

Monarch vs. VX II

I closely evaluated the Monarch 5.5-16.5 and the VX II 6-18 and preferred the VX II in every respect.  The Monarch is a good scope, but in hand, it has a cheap feel compared to the Leupold.

With all due respect, I recently evaluated a Monarch 5.5x16.5 and a VX III (can't remember magnification) and decided on the Monarch.  I didn't get a "cheap feel" with the scope & to my eyes the glass was much superior in terms of clarity and brightness to the VX III.  The Monarch also cost less!

Funny how two people can evaluate the same two products using the same criteria & come up with entirely different opinions
